As a die-hard Marvel fan who has been following the exploits of Deadpool and Wolverine since the early days of comic books, I can confidently say that the ending of “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a perfect blend of action, comedy, and emotion. The original idea of Colossus’ demise would have undeniably been impactful, but it would have also robbed us of the hilarious camaraderie between Deadpool and Wolverine that we saw on screen.
The team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respectively, marked the culmination of decades of character development for these iconic Marvel figures. However, an alternate ending, one that would have been much more somber, almost made it into the movie. In this original version, a key X-Men member was poised to meet his end. The climactic scene of this blockbuster hit, which shattered box office records, hinted at the demise of our titular heroes as they joined hands to the strains of “Like a Prayer.” Fortunately for fans, both Deadpool and Wolverine managed to survive their multiversal escapade in the final cut. Yet, the original ending of “Deadpool & Wolverine” would have been far more melancholic.
Ryan Reynolds shared on Instagram that he selected “Like a Prayer” by Madonna for the movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor explained that this song was intended to be played during the demise of Colossus before Wolverine joined the film. In the final cut of Deadpool & Wolverine, Stefan Kapičić reprised his role as Colossus, but his screen time was limited. As per Reynolds, the original ending had Colossus sacrificing himself while holding onto Deadpool, triggering an angry and vengeful response from the Merc with a Mouth.
Since 2017, I’ve been envisioning Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” as the soundtrack for Deadpool’s third film. Initially, my idea was to create a unique, one-shot motion-controlled sequence with Colossus as my partner. However, Colossus would have perished in a previous scene, causing Deadpool to be consumed by rage and revenge. All of this was planned to unfold against the backdrop of Madonna’s powerful song, “Like a Prayer.” But when Hugh Jackman came on board, everything shifted. (And it’s worth noting that Colossus remained untouched in both life and chastity.)
It’s fortunate that in Deadpool & Wolverine, none of the primary X-Men characters meet their end. As Reynolds hinted, the sequel underwent significant transformations during production, but it’s doubtful that many fans would alter a single aspect of this eagerly anticipated collaboration. Even though Colossus, the most impressive big-screen version, might have been better off alive, his demise would have undeniably been the most poignant moment in the series so far.
Deadpool 3 Ending Was for the Better
In one of the least exciting years for this particular genre, the film “Deadpool & Wolverine” was the energizing boost that Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans had been anticipating. This Deadpool sequel is not only the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made, but it also enjoys a 78% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a remarkable 94% score on the audience-focused Popcornmeter. This box office success seems to guarantee that Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will revisit this franchise for many years to come, possibly until they reach their nineties.
Given that both Deadpool and Wolverine survive in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine, fans are anticipating their presence in the upcoming two Avengers films. It’s highly likely that they will make an appearance, if not have more substantial roles, in Secret Wars. In fact, there’s a good possibility they could even lead the Russo brothers-directed movies, considering their success since Avengers: Endgame. Fingers crossed that we’ll also see Colossus and other mutant companions featured in future installments.
