Audience members have been given their first peek at the upcoming movie where Oscar Isaac and Mark Hamill reconnect in a galaxy not too far away, way back in time. Titled “The King of Kings“, this animated film offers a unique blend of science fiction and the tale of the original divine figure. The trailer for the movie provides a sneak peek at Isaac’s metamorphosis into none other than the Son of God himself.
Under the guidance of the acclaimed visual effects expert Seong-ho Jang and produced by Mofac Animation of South Korea, The King of Kings introduces an exciting twist to a commonly known Biblical narrative with its time travel theme. Inspired by a work of Charles Dickens, this film focuses on none other than the famous author himself, accompanied by his son, Walter. They unwittingly stumble upon a gateway between dimensions and come face-to-face with the most talked-about personality in history – Jesus Christ is not the only Biblical figure they meet, though; they also get to interact with a group of 27 notable figures from the year 27 C.E., including Mary, Joseph, Jesus’ disciples, and even some of his adversaries.
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement about stepping into the role of Jesus Christ – a choice that truly embodies the film’s mission to portray Jesus and his teachings in a tender, kid-friendly manner. On their official website for King of Kings , they make this clear:
Through his calm, articulate speaking style and passionate performance, Isaac effectively conveys the core principles of Jesus’ teachings in a manner that is both relatable and interesting to younger viewers.
Isaac is teamed up with an illustrious ensemble of fellow “Star Wars” colleagues such as Mark Hamill playing King Herod, Forest Whitaker portraying the apostle Peter, and Uma Thurman as Catherine Dickens. You can watch the official teaser trailer for “The King of Kings” in the video below.
‘The King of Kings’ Draws Inspiration From a Little-Known Short Story
In a somewhat unexpected twist, the film “The King of Kings” derives from a short story written by Charles Dickens, titled “The Life of Our Lord.” Originally penned for his own children and read out loud during their Christmas celebrations each year, this tale recounts the lives of Dickens, his son, and their cat Willa as they journey through the life of Jesus Christ. Despite being written in the mid-19th century, “The Life of Our Lord” remained unrecognized until 1934 when it was published more than six decades after Dickens’ demise. As this tale was designed for young audiences, an animated adaptation serves as a fitting contemporary means to perpetuate Dickens’ cherished tradition of imparting his faith through storytelling.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me tell you, it’s tough to outshine my role as mankind’s savior, but I’ve got an exciting lineup of projects on the horizon, apart from “The King of Kings”. There are several roles that might raise eyebrows among the family crowd. I’m diving into the dark and mysterious world of Dr. Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, where I’ll be sharing the screen with Kristen Stewart in the vampire film “Flesh of the Gods”. I’ll also revisit religious themes as Dante Alighieri in “Hand of Dante”.
In a completely different genre, you’ll see me in animated form in “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”, where I’ll be back as Miguel O’Hara. Lastly, I can’t wait to step into the shoes of Solid Snake for the film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s “Metal Gear” games. It’s going to be one heck of a ride!
The King of Kings is slated for a U.S. release on Easter weekend.
