Oscars 2025: Argentina Backs ‘Kill the Jockey’ in International Feature Race

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for offbeat and thought-provoking narratives, I can’t help but be intrigued by “Kill the Jockey”. The blend of psychological thriller, comedy of manners, and surrealist camp sounds like an intoxicating cocktail that’s bound to leave me both on the edge of my seat and chuckling in disbelief.

Argentina is supporting the film “Kill the Jockey“, a humorous and dreamlike equestrian-based thriller directed by Luis Ortega, as its entry for the 2025 Academy Awards competition in the Best International Feature Film category.

The movie debuted in Venice showcases Nahuel Pérez Biscayart as the troubled horse racer Remo Manfredini. Following a fateful incident on the track, Remo starts to ponder his male identity, leading him to feel misplaced. After vanishing from the hospital and aimlessly roaming the streets of Buenos Aires in search of self-discovery, Remo becomes the target of mobster boss Sirena (Daniel Gimenez Cacho), who is determined to track him down, either alive or dead, as Remo owes him a substantial debt.

This film is a blend of a psychological suspense story and a refined social satire, infused with an abundance of offbeat humor reminiscent of surrealist art. It’s expected to stand out as a distinctive contender for the Academy Awards this season.

The film “Kill the Jockey” was created by Ortega and Esteban Perroud, through their production company El Despacho, along with Benjamín Domenech, Santiago Gallelli, and Matías Roveda from Rei Pictures; Axel Kuschevatzky and Cindy Teperman of Infinity Hill; Charlie Cohen from Warner Music Entertainment, and Nando Vila and Paz Lázaro from Exile. Benicio Del Toro serves as one of the executive producers for this production.

Protagonist Pictures is handling world sales on the project.

Argentina has been put forward as a contender for the Best International Feature Film Oscar on eight occasions, with its most recent nomination being for Santiago Mitre’s political drama “Argentina, 1985” in the year 2022. Notably, Argentina has managed to secure the prestigious Oscar award on two separate occasions.

As a gamer eagerly anticipating the big event, I can’t help but feel the thrill as we approach December 17th, when the candidates for the best international feature contenders will be revealed. Fast forward to January 17th, 2025, and the nominations will officially be announced. And finally, mark your calendars for Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, as that’s when the grand 2025 Academy Awards ceremony will take place!
