Oscars 2025: Brazil Submits Walter Salles’ ‘I’m Still Here’ for Best International Feature

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for poignant and personal narratives, I am thrilled to hear about Walter Salles’ new feature, “I’m Still Here.” Having grown up watching his work, it’s heartening to see him return to his roots, especially after such a significant gap.

Next year, Brazil will submit Walter Salles’ latest film, “I’m Still Here,” as its entry in the Best International Feature category at the Oscars. This is 26 years after Salles earned an Oscar nomination in the same category for his groundbreaking international debut, “Central Station,” from 1998.

The film titled “I’m Still Here” made its debut at Venice recently and held its North American premiere in Toronto, marks director Salles’ return to a Brazilian feature after 16 years, and is one of his most intimate works yet.

This narrative revolves around the Paiva family, particularly Rubens and Eunice, and their life during Brazil’s military rule from 1964 to 1985. The Paivas were dear friends of Salles and he often spent his younger years within their home with the five Paiva children. Rubens Paiva, a Brazilian congressman, was an outspoken critic of the dictatorship. Tragically, in 1971, he was apprehended by the regime, subjected to torture, and eventually killed. With her husband gone, Eunice must find new strength to rebuild her fractured family.

Based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s 2015 book, “I’m Still Here,” the movie features Fernanda Torres and Selton Mello in the leading roles. Sony Pictures Classics holds the distribution rights for North America.

Brazil has been nominated 4 times for the Best International Feature Oscar but has yet to win.

On December 17, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to reveal the films that have made it onto the shortlist for the Oscars in 2025. The nominees will then be announced on January 17, 2025. Lastly, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 2.
