Oscars 2025: Finland Picks ‘Family Time’ for International Feature Race

As a gamer with a penchant for cinema, especially those that delve deep into human relationships and emotions, I find myself intrigued by Finland’s entry for the 2025 Oscars – “Family Time”. Having spent countless hours navigating through the complexities of family dynamics in various video games, I can confidently say that this dark comedy seems to have struck a chord that resonates with my gaming heart.

Finland has chosen the dramedy “Family Time” as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars, representing the nation.

The movie, penned and directed by Tia Kouvo, offers a keen exploration of familial bonds, focusing on three troubled generations reuniting at their grandparents’ home during the holiday season. Actors Ria Kataja, Elina Knihtilä, Leena Uotila, Tom Wentzel, and Jarkko Pajunen bring life to this dark comedy that revives the awkwardness often associated with Christmas celebrations.

Jussi Rantamäki and Emilia Haukka collaborated with Aamu Film Company and Vilda Bomben Film to create a full-length movie. This film is an extended version of Kouvo’s 2018 short film by the same name.

Last year, the movie Family Time made its debut in Berlinale’s Encounters section, and it was released in Finland last November. Since then, it has won numerous awards at Finland’s Academy Awards, known as the Jussis, including best film, best director, and best screenplay. The Match Factory is responsible for handling international distribution of the movie.

Finland has only been nominated once for an Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category, which was for Aki Kaurismäki’s “The Man Without a Past” in 2002, but hasn’t won any as of yet. Aki Kaurismäki’s latest film, “Fallen Leaves,” from 2023, and Juho Kuosmanen’s “Compartment No. 6” from 2021 made the Oscar longlist, but neither were nominated in the end.

Countdown’s on! Mark your calendars: November 14, 2024 is the submission deadline for the 96th Oscars. Excitingly, the shortlist for the Best International Feature Film contenders will be revealed on December 17. Fast forward to January 17, 2025, when nominations are announced. Last but not least, get ready to celebrate the 2025 Academy Awards on Sunday, March 2!

The Finnish panel praises the movie “Family Time” as an extraordinarily unique and skillfully crafted production that artfully blends form and emotion to create cinematic excellence. Subtle insights into everyday Finnish life transform into a relatable, global narrative, as evidenced by the film’s international acclaim.
