Oscars 2025: Laapataa Ladies writer hopes All We Imagine As Light enters through independent category; addresses selection committee’s controversy

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of Indian cinema over the years, I must say that the selection of Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025 is nothing short of a breath of fresh air. The film’s humble beginnings with its ensemble of newcomers and the unwavering support from Aamir Khan Productions (AKP) is a testament to the power of perseverance and the value of simplicity in storytelling.

As a passionate supporter, I’m thrilled to be part of the community that has warmly embraced Laapataa Ladies’ selection as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025. The response, both from within our borders and abroad, has been nothing short of incredible.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Sneha expressed that the announcements received a variety of responses, ranging from criticism to admiration. She added, “Many people criticize the committee, but everyone seems to have their personal preferences. However, the general response this time has been so heartwarmingly positive that the enthusiasm is truly inspiring.

Under the guidance of fresh talents such as Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, and Nitanshi Goel, Laapataa Ladies has managed to outshine numerous well-established and wealthy films to secure this position. Amidst jubilations, there is a significant debate online, with many suggesting that Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light could have been a more formidable competitor given its recent success at Cannes.

“It seems plausible to have two outstanding entries from India. I hope they can make it as an independent submission, and if they do, I would be equally thrilled to support them, just like I would cheer for myself.” For those not familiar, Laapataa Ladies featured prominently Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, Geeta Agrawal Sharma, and Satendra Soni in pivotal roles.

The highly praised film was financed by Aamir Khan Productions (AKP), who skillfully guided their 2001 movie, Lagaan, to nominations through a well-orchestrated strategy that encompassed extensive promotions and aggressive campaigning. “Now let’s hear from the production team about their future plans,” Sneha continued. “Who else but AKP could manage it so effectively? They’ve been through the process, and after experiencing Lagaan, I believe they have gained greater wisdom.

In a setting where intricate storylines, viewers, and judging committees are typically found, they’ve opted for the straightforward yet deep movie “Laapataa Ladies,” which has left Sneha Desai delighted.
