Oscars: Hungary Submits ‘Semmelweis’ for International Feature Race

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for stories that delve into the lives of trailblazers and pioneers, I am thrilled to hear about Lajos Koltai’s biopic, Semmelweis, representing Hungary at the 2025 Oscars. The teaser alone has ignited my curiosity, with its evocative imagery and the intense portrayal of Miklós H. Vecsei as the passionate yet short-tempered Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that a movie close to my heart, the biopic ‘Semmelweis’, created by Lajos Koltai, has been chosen to represent Hungary in the 2025 Oscars for the best international feature category. This is a significant moment for me and the film community, as we hope this powerful story will captivate audiences worldwide.

This story follows the life of Hungarian physician Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis, a key figure in antiseptic practices who earned the title “the savior of mothers” for his work reducing fatal infections after childbirth. The narrative unfolds in 19th-century Vienna, where we encounter Semmelweis as a dedicated yet fiery doctor, portrayed by Miklós H. Vecsei, tirelessly seeking to uncover the secret behind puerperal fever, a devastating mystery plaguing childbirth survivors. Despite his groundbreaking discovery of the infection’s cause and a preventive method, Semmelweis faces resistance from colleagues and superiors who aim to undermine his work.

Semmelweis was a massive success in its home country, selling over 350,000 tickets and earning more than $2 million during its initial release, making it the highest-grossing Hungarian film of the previous five years. NFI World Sales is responsible for managing global sales for this title.

Worldwide, Koltai is most recognized as a film cinematographer, particularly for movies like Sunshine, The Legend of 1900, and Taking Sides. In the year 2001, he was nominated for an Oscar in the category of cinematography for his work on Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that my nation has chosen the film “Semmelweis” to be our contender in the 2024 Academy Awards race. A team of esteemed representatives from the Hungarian National Film Institute, the Film Academy, and industry experts made this momentous decision.

Hungary has consistently excelled in Oscar nominations, boasting a total of ten nods and two victories – for István Szabó’s “Mephisto” in 1981 and “Son of Saul” in 2015. However, since 2017, no Hungarian film has been nominated again at the Academy Awards. Ildikó Enyedi’s “On Body and Soul” made it to the final five contenders that year but did not secure the win.
