The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the nominees for the 2025 Oscars, specifically those contending for the Best International Feature Film category. Among these nominees is a first-time entrant in this category – Latvia. Their debut film in the international Oscar race is “Flow,” an animated movie directed by Gints Zilbalodis. This film follows a cat displaced by floodwaters, who joins forces with other animals on a journey to find survival and a new home.
Flow is also in the running for the best animated feature Academy Award.
At this year’s Golden Globes, the movie “Sideshow/Janus” triumphed over more famous competitors such as Dreamworks’ “The Wild Robot,” Disney/Pixar’s sequel “Inside Out 2,” Netflix’s “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” and Disney’s “Moana 2,” to claim the award for best animated feature.
Originally, Senegal and Thailand were among the fifteen countries in contention for the International Academy Award, but neither of them ultimately qualified for the final selection.
This year, several movies are vying for the best international feature award, including Brazil’s “I’m Still Here,” directed by Walter Salles, a film about a family’s resilience in the face of brokenness; Denmark’s “The Girl With the Needle,” a black-and-white historical thriller helmed by Magnus von Horn; France’s submission, “Emilia Pérez,” a Netflix production directed by Jacques Audiard that blends genres and tells a transgender coming-of-age story as much as it does a Mexican crime thriller musical; and Germany’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” an Iran-set drama from exiled director Mohammad Rasoulof.
In the final round of Ireland’s award ceremonies, the cheeky rap comedy “Kneecap,” written by Rich Peppiatt and starring Michael Fassbender, did not make it to the top 5 selections.
85 different countries entered their best international feature film contenders for this year’s Oscars. These qualifying films showcased a diverse array of global cinema, encompassing everything from the political drama of Brazil’s “I’m Still Here” to the chilling period horror of Austria’s nominee “The Devil’s Bath,” as well as the fantastical charm of Canada’s “Universal Language.
The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
