otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE Presents "Last Supper" by Steve Harrison

As a seasoned gamer and art enthusiast, I must admit that the announcement of Steve Harrison’s “Last Supper” exhibit at otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE has piqued my interest significantly. My gaming life has taught me to appreciate collaborative efforts, especially when they result in something as intriguing as this cross-disciplinary project.

otherthings by THE SHOPHOUSE has announced Steve Harrison’s upcoming exhibit, “Last Supper.”

This project is a joint effort involving a ceramic artist, Jun Takahashi, musician Olivier Cong, tea expert Nana Chan, and chef Margaret Xu. Known as “The Last Supper,” it will be divided into two segments: an exhibition and a meal. These segments aim to offer significant insights across various disciplines by commenting on the enduring influence of traditional symbols and the transformative capabilities of collaborative artistry.

Drawing inspiration from the biblical event, “The Last Supper” exhibition will showcase a collection of 24 ash-toned irregular bowls, mirroring the traditional Chinese practice of using bowls as the primary eating vessel during meals. As Harrison explained, “A bowl is the most organic, simplest form,” with the functional beakers symbolizing the communal meal shared by Jesus and his disciples. The ceramicist intentionally crafted 24 pieces, anticipating that half might not survive the firing process – symbolically representing the 12 disciples. Remarkably, all of the beakers survived, enabling Harrison to convey his spiritual interpretation. The numbers 2442, which are mirror images of each other, add up to 12, and this same room number was a significant element in the film “Rigor Mortis,” which played a role in Harrison’s creative thought process.

As Takahashi, I paid tribute to my dear friend Harrison by crafting a unique piece of my own: reinterpreted church pews – the “Anarchy Chairs.” These pieces showcase Harrison’s iconic ceramic sunflowers and bronze lighting sculptures, which skillfully incorporate religious motifs derived from biblical events.

Accompanying the exhibition is a distinctive dining event led by Cong, Chan, and Xu. Composer Cong has created an immersive soundtrack using Harrison’s beakers, which will play during both the meal and the exhibition. Plantation Tea’s Chan will present a tea ceremony as a tribute to the beaker’s original function. Lastly, Chef Xu will reinvent the concept of gathering in her creative take on modern Chinese cuisine, focusing on using local produce and promoting sustainable practices.

The ‘Last Supper’ exhibit is open for private viewings from October 27 to November 24, exclusively by appointment, at otherthings’ latest exhibition venue. The event will occur in two sessions on October 26, with a ticket price of $2,442 HKD. To reserve your spot, visit the otherthings website.
