As a passionate admirer, I was captivated by the transformative power of style as depicted in Our Legacy‘s Fall/Winter 2025 manifesto, “AULA.” During Milan Fashion Week, this collection took me on an intriguing journey, exploring how our attire and surroundings can dramatically reshape our exterior image. The tension between the comfort of everyday life and the intensity of being ‘on duty’ was beautifully encapsulated by designer Cristopher Nying in his collection notes. It was a thought-provoking exploration that left me pondering the impact of clothing on our self-perception.
Nying expressed fascination about how our environments shape the personas we take on, using an example: “Just as a tobacconist might appear ordinary and practical during work hours, yet transform into a lively and expressive individual at night, I’ve observed similar changes. It was striking when I ran into an old hockey teammate in the park, playing with his children; initially, I didn’t recognize him. It’s amusing how situations can blur our perception of familiar faces, making someone seem like a stranger until we recall the context.
For Milan’s high society, Nying’s models were dressed in two drastically different styles, making it challenging to recognize one person from their counterpart. In the lookbook above, you can see the designer’s bold contrasts: rough streetwear enthusiasts transformed into elegant socialites, daring avant-garde fashionistas toned down their looks, and intimidating biker chic individuals morphed into preppy educators.
Tobacconist Nying also discovered a key element on the mood board for the line – similar to how the characters in the collection undergo a day-to-night transformation, the design itself reflects the real-life evolution of tobacco stores from luxury establishments into “parcel hubs.” As the designer pointed out, the colors used in the clothing – deep browns, ashy grays, muted greens and yellows – seem particularly suited for a smoke shop’s customer.
In simpler terms, the modern Our Legacy customer should be adaptable, comfortable with blending their personal style from different areas, and ready to explore new fashion choices based on this blend, stepping out of their usual clothing comfort zones.
