As a die-hard fan of Outer Banks who has spent countless hours underwater myself, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the sheer magnitude of effort and skill that went into the scuba diving sequence in Season 4, Part 1. Having had my own share of fears and apprehensions while diving, I could relate to Madison Bailey’s initial nervousness when she received the script for JJ and Kiara’s underwater adventure.
Caution: Season 4, Part 1 of ‘Outer Banks’ contains spoilers! If you haven’t watched the first five episodes yet, which are set to air in the 2024 TV schedule, you can catch up with them using a Netflix subscription.
In every season of Outer Banks, the characters get involved in thrilling and intense situations. But in Season 4, Part 1, they outdid themselves with an incredible underwater sequence during Episode 2, where JJ and Kiara fought to survive inside a sunken ship. Naturally, when I got the opportunity to talk to Rudy Pankow and Madison Bailey, I was curious to learn more about the making of this memorable scene.
Madison Bailey And Rudy Pankow Break Down How They Prepared For The Scuba Scene
To make sure I understood the complexity of the sequence they were filming, I wanted to learn about their preparation process, so I asked Bailey and Pankow about it.
Initially, Bailey expressed her apprehension upon receiving the script indicating that JJ and Kie would search for the hidden treasure underwater. Yet, working alongside Rudy Pankow, who proved to be an inspiringly fearless co-star, alleviated her anxiety significantly.
Looking at the script, I found myself thinking, ‘Is this really for me?’ However, working alongside such an exciting scene partner as Rudy certainly alleviated any apprehensions I had.
With their concerns eased, Bailey and Pankow shared with me an intriguing detail – they took up scuba diving specifically for executing this large-scale scene. Actress Kiara discussed this experience and its role in helping her conquer a significant fear by explaining:
Preparing for it was like gearing up for an underwater adventure in the sea – a place that gives me chills due to my apprehensions about deep waters and the potential risks involved.
At the same time, Bailey pointed out, Pankow was thrilled to shoot that particular scene. Additionally, he appreciated the fact that they needed to obtain scuba certification for it, as he shared with me:
To clarify, it turned out that we needed to acquire scuba certifications, an experience I must admit I found enjoyable. Now, having that scuba certification brings me delight. Indeed, it was quite entertaining to go through the process.
All in all, the scene showcased JJ and Kiara engaging in pulse-pounding, perilous action typical of the Outer Banks (OBX), which seems to have been quite an ordeal to set up. Yet, they enjoyed the process immensely and picked up a new talent along the way. Moreover, what added to the exhilaration was the location where it was shot.
The JJ And Kiara Actors Explain The Set They Filmed The Sequence On
As Bailey pointed out, while they were learning to scuba dive in the ocean, the footage shown was actually captured in a tank. During our conversation, Pankow provided additional details about the scene as well.
Currently, the structure they constructed was astonishingly large. This monstrosity was housed within a vast, pitch-black tank, almost entirely enveloped in darkness. The dimensions of this behemoth were staggering, approximately 20 yards by 30 yards wide and equally deep, making it quite an impressive sight to behold.
Simultaneously, Bailey shared details about the underwater structure they navigated. Although it wasn’t a real submerged ship, the team constructed a similar setting, as Bailey explained to me.
During filming scenes in the pool, you get to enjoy the playful aspect of holding your breath underwater. It’s so much more enjoyable! Plus, the set was absolutely stunning. Honestly, I can’t even imagine how they constructed that ship, or with what materials. Truly, their skill and talent leaves me in awe.
From a spectator’s perspective, I too was impressed by the level of craftsmanship and preparation that went into creating such an extraordinary underwater sequence, in which both lead actors and their stunt counterparts showed remarkable dedication.
Rudy Pankow Opens Up About How They Shot The Sequence
Apart from sharing insights about their acting roles, Rudy Pankow additionally enlightened me on the way they filmed the scuba diving scenes. Despite working with stunt doubles, they managed to capture a significant portion of it themselves. Moreover, Rudy explained the process behind filming those parts as well, revealing to me:
We divided our shooting into distinct segments, resembling JJ’s and Kiara’s coverage styles. When the conflict erupted, the doubles stepped in to assist, requiring us to collaborate on that particular scene, much like a tag team. However, up until that point, it was mostly us handling things.
In summary, it was fantastic to see these characters earn their scuba certifications and dive headfirst into an unforgettable experience – a scene that further emphasizes Outer Banks’ reputation for exhilarating sequences, and this instance in Episode 2 certainly set a new standard.
I’m absolutely thrilled to discover what exciting events are in store as we approach the November 7, 2024 premiere of Season 4 Part 2 on Netflix. I’m particularly curious about how JJ and Kiara’s relationship will develop further, and I find myself charmed by this mature rendition of the Pogues. Yet, it’s the thrilling action sequences like the recent scuba diving scene that truly grab my attention in OBX. I sincerely hope there will be more such heart-stopping moments to come!
