‘Outlander’ Just Went Somewhere We Never Expected

As a die-hard fan of Outlander who has been following the series since its very first episode, I must say that this week’s episode was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The plot twists were so thick and fast that I found myself clutching my Starz subscription like a lifeline.

The show Outlander is renowned for its penchant for unexpected twists, leaving viewers in awe with emotional upheavals, graphic scenes, and mind-blowing connections. In June of 2023, the initial installment of Outlander‘s seventh season graced our screens, and following a prolonged anticipation, the second half of this gripping series began airing weekly on Starz starting from November 22.

It wasn’t surprising, but so far, Outlander has truly outdone itself in season 7. The series has stirred up a range of emotions among viewers – laughter, shock, tears, and even confusion. It seems like the beloved series isn’t running out of surprises anytime soon. Three episodes into the new season, Outlander left everyone stunned with a major twist, sending Claire on an entirely unexpected journey.

The Most Devastating Moment in ‘Outlander’ Season 7 So Far

Episode 11 of Outlander Season 7 was intense, and it undeniably stunned viewers deeply. A touching exchange took place between Claire (played by Caitríona Balfe), Lord John (David Berry), and the Captain of the HMS Roberts. (Warning: Spoilers!) Claire learned heartbreaking news about Jamie’s demise. The captain had documents showing that Jamie (Sam Heughan) boarded a different ship, the Euterpe, to reunite with Claire in Philadelphia. However, the Euterpe sank. This devastating revelation affected Claire profoundly and left her questioning her future.

In a turn of events that deepened the tension and caused further concern among viewers regarding Jamie’s fate, it was revealed that shortly after his apparent disappearance, Claire was discovered aiding a rebel. This act led to her being labeled as a rebel herself, facing arrest and potential execution for treason. In an attempt to shield Claire, Lord John, who held a strong bond with Jamie and harbored romantic feelings towards him, proposed marriage to Claire, leveraging his name and high status for her protection. However, unlike Jamie and Claire’s marriage, the union between Claire and John was devoid of any genuine emotions, let alone the possibility of them blossoming.

‘Outlander’ Season 7’s Massive Twist

In the last episode of Season 7, it was suggested that Claire’s marriage to her friend, Lord John, could be the sole means of saving her from execution. Despite everyone’s disbelief, Claire reluctantly agreed to this unusual arrangement. The wedding was a spectacle that was hard to watch, even for those present. However, the unexpectedness didn’t end with the ceremony itself. The night that followed was even more surprising and unpredictable. Although there was no warmth or affection during their simple home wedding, the evening took an entirely different turn.

After their wedding, the two newly-wedded souls secluded themselves, overwhelmed by their personal grief following the tragic loss of Jamie. While Lord John sat before a chessboard, a piece of furniture he linked to Jamie, and drowned his sorrow in wine, Claire was on the verge of taking her own life with a scalpel. The one factor that held her back was the thought of Jamie’s pain at her demise.

The word ‘tragic’ doesn’t even come close to what is happening in this episode, but Lord John put an end to it. He went to her room, stating that he would not grieve alone. A few arguably disturbing moments unfolded, where the two let out their aggression and sorrow on each other. However, their anger slowly turned into the need to feel someone’s presence. Feeling Jamie’s presence. And so, their night turned intimate, but not with each other, because both of them were actually imagining Jamie back in their life.

The Ending of ‘Outlander’ Season 7, Episode 11

The climax of episode 11 in Season 7 of Outlander leaves everyone puzzled once more. Spoiler Alert! Following Claire and Lord John’s wedding and an eventful night together, who shows up unexpectedly at Claire’s doorstep later on? None other than our favorite, dramatic Scot. Throughout some of the most thrilling seasons of Outlander, James Fraser has survived through the wildest situations, so being stranded on a sinking ship seems like the least risky scenario – if he had even boarded the ship, which we can see he clearly did not.

Jamie’s comeback stirs up several noticeable queries. For instance, upon arriving at Lord John’s residence, he was being pursued by Redcoats (as has often been the case). The motive behind this pursuit is not yet entirely clear, but it could be that the resurfacing of a supposedly deceased rebel ignited suspicion and the desire for answers among the British soldiers. Additionally, there’s another significant revelation: Claire and John’s marriage, along with its consummation. Jamie would likely grasp the former given their friendship with John, but the latter could potentially lead to complications, though this is yet to be determined.

It’s hard to imagine that “Outlander” Season 8 could be any more filled with drama, given the shocking plot twists in episode 11, particularly the revelation about William Grey, John’s son and Jamie’s biological child. In a conversation among Claire, Lord John, and Jamie, they revealed this long-held secret to William, who overheard them discussing it. This revelation seemed to plunge him into an existential crisis, causing him to develop a cold indifference towards both his father and the man he now knows as his biological father.

In the unceasing turmoil of ‘Outlander’, we can’t help but admit our fascination with it. Anticipation for the next installment is undeniably high, hoping to shed light on some mysteries left by episode 11. One thing that’s clear, though, is that Jamie and Claire will emerge from this ordeal stronger than they were before. ‘Outlander’ airs every week on Starz.
