Fans of Outlander might currently be experiencing their customary wait between seasons, often referred to as another “Droughtlander”. However, Starz has been offering plenty of exciting news for the expanding TV world. Not only have they revealed when the prequel series, titled “Outlander: Blood of My Blood”, will air in 2025, but they’ve also announced a renewal for Season 2. That’s right, we’ll be seeing a Season 2 before the first one even debuts, and there’s an interesting connection to the original series that has already stirred up some emotional responses in me.
Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Renewed For Season 2
I found it intriguing that the initial air date of August 8 for the first season premiere seemed like a tribute to the original series’ debut, especially considering the fan-filled “The Gathering” event preceding it. Given this, it feels appropriate to announce additional episodes ahead of time. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts spoke about the renewal of Season 2, expressing optimism about how audiences will react to the forthcoming romantic tales between characters like Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), compared to their previous love stories. He mentioned:
The incredible skill and devotion that our team has invested in ‘Outlander: Blood of my Blood’ is truly remarkable, and we’re overjoyed to carry on spinning these captivating love tales in Season Two. As audiences grew fond of Jamie and Claire, we eagerly anticipate that viewers will be equally smitten with the new pairs they’ll encounter this summer.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must clarify that the upcoming series titled as an “independent prequel,” focusing on the romantic tales of Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) in the 18th century, as well as Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) during World War I, doesn’t necessarily imply it will only have a solitary season. While each love story may be set in different eras, there’s a possibility that the series could span multiple seasons to explore these captivating romances more fully.
It’s uncertain if Jamie and Claire’s parents will recreate the timeless romantic charm that is characteristic of Outlander, but the intention of the Starz series is to create a fresh beginning so that new viewers can join in while still delighting longtime Outlander fans with recurring characters such as Dougal, Colum, and, among others, Murtagh – one of my personal favorites from the entire series.
Absolutely, Murtagh won’t be the same character as when he was deeply connected with Jamie during the primary storyline, but I’m eager to reacquaint myself with him. However, it wasn’t the prospect of Murtagh’s return that moved me upon hearing the renewal details; instead, it was something else about the news that made me feel emotional.

Why The Details Are Surprisingly Emotional
In addition to the announcement that work on Season 2 began on June 23, Starz’s renewal confirmation also revealed that production will take place on the same sets where Outlander filmed for a decade prior to Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe finishing their filming last year. It seems likely that Blood of My Blood is using these stages for practical purposes rather than out of nostalgia, but it certainly gives the impression of continuing the legacy of the original series.
It’s quite promising that we might catch some more breathtaking Scottish landscapes, similar to those frequently showcased in earlier seasons of Outlander, given the storyline after Jamie’s parents. In summary, there’s much excitement building as the release of Blood of My Blood approaches… and perhaps even a release date for the eighth and concluding season of the original series.
Presently, “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” is slated to debut on Friday, 8th August at 8 p.m. ET on Starz. Subsequently, episodes will be available weekly on the Starz app and Starz streaming and on-demand platforms. It’s worth noting that the Season 1 premiere coincidentally falls a day before the eleventh anniversary of the original series, which premiered on August 9, 2014.
