As a seasoned Overwatch player with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the introduction of Hero bans is long overdue and has breathed new life into the game. The Esports World Cup trial was nothing short of revolutionary, adding an exciting layer of strategy to competitive play.
Long-awaited bans for Hero characters have started appearing in Overwatch matches, following the Esports World Cup which introduced significant changes to gameplay.
Discussions around hero bans have been heating up recently, with many gamers suggesting a revision to the current system due to their belief that the game’s meta should undergo some changes, similar to how League of Legends and VALORANT handle their metas.
Currently visible, gamers are advocating for the implementation of Hero bans in the ranked mode of Overwatch 2.
Overwatch Hero bans applauded after Esports World Cup trial
At long last, hero bans made their debut in competitive matches during the Esports World Cup held in Saudi Arabia. In this tournament, teams were granted the ability to prohibit one character from each map, typically the high-performing hero of the opposing team’s roster. This strategic move forced opponents to adapt to unfavorable game metas.
The trial run was a huge success too, as Overwatch talent Kevin “AVRL” Walker claimed it was the “best possible addition” to the esport.
“He stated on X (previously Twitter) that, in his opinion, hero bans have been an excellent enhancement to the competitive format lately.”
Not only did it surpass my expectations, but it significantly enhanced the competitiveness and strategic depth of professional Overwatch games. This has led to a wider variety of team compositions being used.
Overwatch Ranked players demand Hero bans
In my opinion, the introduction of hero bans has significantly enhanced the competitive format in Overwatch (OW) recently. It has surpassed my expectations by boosting gameplay quality for professional players, leading to more competitive games, a wider variety of team compositions, and a greater degree of strategic depth – all elements I’ve longed for in the game.

It’s not surprising that ranked players believe adding hero bans could improve the game significantly, especially since the developers are now questioning the current structure and are contemplating a return to the 6v6 format.
On Reddit, a fan expressed, “I’d love to have them in all game modes. Playing other characters occasionally is something I’m willing to do just to ensure that certain ones aren’t in my games.”
A different phrasing for the given statement could be: “Another individual suggested, ‘It’s great if the game appreciates my adaptability.‘ However, there was resistance, particularly from players who specialize in a single hero and always choose them in games, as they might find it annoying not being allowed to stick with their preferred character.”
Some players suggested that Tournament Mode, which involves entire teams, would be a good fit for the game, but unfortunately, that particular playlist hasn’t been made accessible in Overwatch yet.
