Amitabh Bachchan is an iconic figure in Bollywood, who has been captivating audiences for over five decades. Throughout his illustrious career, he has starred in numerous significant and demanding films, one of which is Paa. Interestingly, the director R Balki shared that he nearly abandoned the production of the film as he grappled with finding a way to conceal Amitabh Bachchan’s towering stature and make him appear like a 12-year-old child suffering from Progeria.
In a recent chat with Cinemaz, Balki reminisced about his time working on Paa, where he encountered numerous obstacles during the film’s early visual tests. He divulged that following the scriptwriting and refining intricate details, he, along with the film’s director of photography, PC Sreeram, conducted a test to visualize what Amitabh Bachchan might appear as in the role of Auro.
In a different rendition: The director of “The Pad Man” extensively studied progeria for the movie and recruited a skilled makeup artist from Los Angeles to create the appearance. When the artist applied the first makeup test, the filmmaker wasn’t satisfied as they found Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal too frightening. This trial was conducted in Hyderabad while Mr. Bachchan was busy working on another project. Later, they adjusted the lighting, but they still believed that Bachchan appeared even scarier.
As an ardent admirer putting it in my own words, let me share this intriguing behind-the-scenes detail: The filmmaker candidly confessed that our towering megastar stood tall at 6’2, which made me wonder how he was ever considered for a child role! Alas, they hadn’t foreseen the part, nor possessed the technology or finances to miniaturize him. Thus, in his eyes, it seemed like a regrettable oversight.
The atmosphere grew tense as Amitabh, concerned about the recurring delays, inquired whether additional trials were necessary. Realizing that Amitabh Bachchan didn’t grasp the circumstances, R Balki was compelled to display the test images, resulting in a quiet room.
The director of Ki and Ka, reflecting back, said, “I informed PC that I believed we should abandon this project; it wasn’t working out. It would be a source of embarrassment. Let’s not waste any more money and flee instead.” At that point, the director chose to cancel the film and consulted with Sreeram about it. Sreeram offered reassurance, aiming to alleviate all concerns. PC continued experimenting and eventually discovered a high angle that made Big B appear diminutive. As a consequence, they filmed the movie from this perspective.
On the 4th of December, 2009, Paa saw its premiere. Notable actors Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan played significant characters in this production. This movie garnered acclaim and won numerous significant accolades during that time.
