The sudden death of renowned Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan was a profound shock to both his fans and fellow industry peers. Although it was common knowledge that he had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, few anticipated that such an esteemed figure would depart from us so prematurely in the course of life. His demise has left a significant empty space for many, including Tigmanshu Dhulia. In a recent interview, this Indian film director confessed that Irrfan Khan’s passing has significantly impacted his creative writing, and he now feels bereft of genuine companionship within the industry.
Tigmanshu Dhulia and Irrfan Khan collaborated on various films such as Haasil, Charas, Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns (among others). Over time, they grew to be close friends who supported each other through difficult periods. After Khan’s passing, Dhulia found himself without a friend. In an interview with ANI, Tigmanshu shared that his creative process was deeply affected by the actor’s death.
Speaking affectionately about his late friend, the director of Bullett Raja expressed, “With him in the film, I could explore more creatively.” He also found it easier to craft detailed scenes, confident that Irrfan would bring them to life superbly. Additionally, Tigmanshu could make the character and plot more complex, a luxury he no longer has. “It’s not a writer’s block,” he conceded, explaining that he can indeed write a scene, but without the actors, it cannot be realized.
The filmmaker also emphasized the importance of having a reliable contact within the industry because it’s difficult to reveal vulnerabilities. The screenwriter pointed out that “Everyone feels vulnerable sometimes,” and warned against sharing weaknesses, as others might exploit such confidences.
Moving forward, the Shagird director expressed that he’s encountering difficulties since he no longer has companions. He lacks someone to consult about which film project he should undertake or seek feedback on a screenplay. In tough times or when a movie isn’t successful, he doesn’t have anyone to confide in.
Tigmanshu Dhulia said, “Just like on screen, it’s important to have real-life friends as well. Unfortunately, at the moment, I don’t have one. It’s challenging for me to trust and open up to someone.” (In reference to Irrfan Khan who passed away in April 2020)
