As a gamer with a deep appreciation for art and cinema, I must say that the upcoming Pablo Larraín biopic, “Maria,” starring Angelina Jolie, has truly piqued my interest. Having grown up admiring the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, I am thrilled to see her life story being brought to the silver screen by such a talented director as Larraín.
It’s been confirmed that Netflix will be securing the distribution rights for the upcoming Pablo Larraín-directed biographical film about Maria, featuring Angelina Jolie in the lead role, within the United States.
The movie narrates the significant phases in the life of renowned opera singer Maria Callas. As expressed by Larraín, “I’m thrilled to collaborate once more with the Netflix team who truly appreciate cinema. This project represents my most intimate work thus far.” He further mentioned, “The film is a fictional exploration and insightful portrayal of Maria Callas, who, having spent her life entertaining audiences globally, ultimately seeks to discover her personal voice, identity, and sing for herself. I feel incredibly privileged to narrate this tale and make it accessible to viewers worldwide, much like Maria did with her life.”
Netflix emerged victorious in a competitive bidding process, securing the right to broadcast the film across America. Previously, Netflix has been home to a series of Larraín films focusing on strong female characters, such as Spencer, featuring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, and Jackie, with Natalie Portman portraying Kennedy Onassis. The upcoming film Maria, in which Angelina Jolie plays Maria Callas, rounds out the trilogy as it delves into the life of the American-born Greek soprano singer who rose to fame as one of the 20th century’s most renowned opera singers. The movie chronicles Callas’ later years in 1970s Paris and features performances by Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, Valeria Golino alongside Jolie.
The movie is being made by Juan de Dios Larraín, Lorenzo Mieli, and Jonas Dornbach in collaboration with production companies The Apartment (a Fremantle subsidiary), Fabula, and Komplizen & Fremantle. This film will debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 29th, and then it will become available on Netflix.
