Pad Man director R. Balki heavily criticizes recent blockbusters in Bollywood, calling them 'damn boring' and 'worst films'

As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience in the film industry, I find R. Balki’s perspective on contemporary blockbusters intriguing and relatable. Having spent my career creating meaningful, engaging, and entertaining films like Pad Man, Paa, and Cheeni Kum, I share his sentiments about the current crop of box office hits.

Acclaimed filmmaker R. Balki is well-known for movies such as Pad Man, Paa, and Cheeni Kum. In a recent discussion, this seasoned director expressed his dissatisfaction with some of the recent box office hits, describing them as “unremarkable” and “dull”.

At a talk held at MIT World Peace University in Pune, R. Balki voiced his opinion regarding the recent hit movies, expressing that the most successful films from the past 4-5 years were actually quite poor in quality.

He expressed that his perspective isn’t limited to intellectual or artistic aspects, but it also reminds him of the traditional idea of ‘entertainment that gives value for money’. Furthermore, he finds them rather dull.

Balki went on to make a comparison with the timeless films of Manmohan Desai. He emphasized the nostalgic portrayal of Amitabh Bachchan that movies like Amar Akbar Anthony and Naseeb provided. He stated his conviction by acknowledging that these classic films were enjoyable to watch, a quality that seems to be missing in today’s box office hits.

In spite of not having an entertaining aspect, these movies have been doing quite well financially at the box office. Balki attributes this success to strategic marketing efforts. He explained that recently, these films have evolved into something more than just entertainment; they’ve taken on a project-like quality, with economic considerations playing a significant role in ensuring they recoup the investment made in their production.

In simpler terms, the director of the movie “Paa” expressed that it’s often the advertising that convinces audiences a film is worth watching, even if it might not be genuinely good. He noted that by the time people realize it’s subpar, the movie has already earned its profits.

Beyond just mentioning it, the filmmaker brought up an intriguing insight about our own minds as viewers. He explained that there are times when we’re reluctant to admit a film isn’t great even after seeing it. Instead, we often search for one or two positive aspects in the movie to hold onto.

Balki explained that if someone appreciates the movie star, they might comment that it was “a good way to pass time,” because spending $500 on it would seem unnecessary and regrettable. He added, “You’ll find yourself saying something like, ‘I wasn’t that silly. Oh, it was… it was enjoyable. It was a bit enjoyable.’

In the previous year, 2023, R Balki’s most recent directorial project featured Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher as the main stars, titled “Ghoomer.
