Jessie Reyez is back with a bang, and it feels like she’s just returned after a short absence. However, it’s not about the length of her hiatus – she released her second studio album, titled “YESSIE,” in September 2022 – but rather that her third album, entitled “PAID IN MEMORIES,” has been eagerly anticipated for some time.
In August of 2023, Reyez unveiled the initial track from her album, titled “JEANS,” featuring Miguel. This was followed by collaborations such as “SHUT UP” with Big Sean, “RIDIN” with Lil Wayne, and “JUST LIKE THAT” with Ari Lennox. To prove she’s more than just a collaborative artist, she showcased her solo capabilities with tracks like “GOLIATH” and “PSILOCYBIN & DAISIES,” the latter drawing inspiration from the Smashing Pumpkins.
In various tracks of the 21-song collection, you’ll find collaborations with Lil Yachty on “HEAD N HEADACHES,” Deyaz on “BROTHER,” and, predictably, frequent partner 6LACK on “6LESSINGS.” This collaboration marks their fourth studio project together, building upon previous works such as Reyez’s “IMPORTED” and “FOREVER,” and 6LACK’s “Homicide.
In his press release, Reyez reflects that his journey towards success has been somewhat complicated for quite some time.
Initially, I was apprehensive about it when I began my career in this field. People often joked that I’d give away many of my best compositions because I write music not only for myself but also for others. Admittedly, there might have been some truth to their jokes. However, it’s essential to note that WAS is the past tense here. I’ve since taken the time to reflect and analyze certain aspects of this situation. Some of it stems from feeling like an underdog for too long, another part comes from not being born into wealth, making my success feel as if it were a coat that was too snug.
Reyez’s latest work, “Paid In Memories,” is a thoughtful and introspective release. It signifies a period of growth for him, both physically (spending time at the gym and building his biceps) and emotionally (feeling more at home with himself). He’s reaping the benefits from seeds he planted years ago, not just in material success but also in experiences like heartbreak and love. He’s been blessed with beautiful romantic relationships as well as people who have stood by him through tough times. In essence, Reyez feels that his life has paid him back in ways more valuable than money – it’s enriched him with precious memories.
In my own words, I’d rephrase it as: “I never claimed to be sane,” is the opening statement – a more mature reflection of Reyez’s 2017 track “Shutter Island”. Other notable additions include a brief voicemail from Lil Wayne on “GOAT NOTE” and the catchy “NYB”, which stands for “New York Baby.
