Palworld Devs Fire Back at Lawsuit from Pokémon and Nintendo

In response to the lawsuit filed by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company, claiming Palworld copied their games, Pocket Pair, Inc., the developer of Palworld, has countered by highlighting that their survival title is a blend or combination of various other popular franchises. This could be an intriguing defense, as it remains to be seen if The Pokémon Company can come up with a robust rebuttal.

A GamesFray post (via VGC) disclosed the strategy used by Pocketpair in response to a lawsuit from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. In the suit, Pokémon asserts that it holds a patent for capturing creatures. However, Pocketpair countered this claim by showcasing another one of their games, Craftopia, which features similar mechanics. They also stated that no legal action is being taken against Craftopia.

In addition, the developers note that Palworld is not the only game where you can capture and release smaller creatures. For instance, Rune Factory 5, Titanfall 2, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Final Fantasy 14, Octopath Traveller, and more offer similar experiences.

Players are still talking about the excitement surrounding Palworld upon its debut last year, often comparing it to “Pokémon with firearms,” which sparked some debate. Some fans even accused the game of utilizing AI to create “unique” creatures similar to existing Pokémons, though these claims remain unverified.

In spite of the ongoing legal proceedings, Pocketpair successfully continued to roll out updates for their survival sim, Palworld. The game has been brimming with Raid Bosses and updates since then, leaving most players content. However, it remains uncertain whether we’ll see more updates in the future or if this lawsuit might have a negative impact on the game’s development.
