Pamela Adlon Talks Series Mania, Teases New Projects With Glenn Close, Rebecca Hall

For Pamela Adlon, starting to watch a new show can be a treacherous thing.

The individual, who is a multi-talented person and has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, stated that once they begin something, it becomes challenging for them to deviate. However, they are determined to complete it, as they articulated at the start of this year’s Series Mania jury conference.

Adlon, a nominee for multiple Emmys in her writing and acting roles on FX’s Better Things and Louie, currently serves as head of an international jury at a television festival that runs until March 28 in Lille, France. She is joined by fellow jurors including Minkie Spiro, director of Downton Abbey and Better Call Saul; award-winning French actress Karin Viard; U.S.-Argentine actor Ignacio Serricchio; and French musician and composer Victor Le Masne. Together, they discussed the outstanding TV programs competing this year.

Some notable shows being showcased at the Series Mania international competition in Lille include Joe Wright’s historical biopic, “Mussolini: Son of the Century,” with Luca Marinelli portraying fascist leader Benito Mussolini. Also featured is the Peacock+ crime drama, “Long Bright River,” starring Amanda Seyfried. Additionally, there’s Cooper Raiff’s dramedy, “Hal & Harper,” which stars Raiff himself, Lili Reinhart, and Mark Ruffalo. Lastly, we have “Kabul,” a series following the fall of the Afghan capital to the Taliban after the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 2021.

Adlon expressed that as an American, it’s a unique experience for her to watch shows in languages other than English at this venue, especially since they are so remarkable. She hopes these productions will be brought to the United States.

Spiro stated that we’ve been discussing if a show would fare better in Europe or the US, and he finds it remarkable,” said Spiro, “because we’re so familiar with one another, we can openly debate tough topics and push each other’s boundaries.

Adlon, fresh off her first stint as a feature director with the film “Babes” featuring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau, has shared some insights about her forthcoming projects. One of these includes a remake of Jorge Gaggero’s 2004 Argentine success, “Cama Adentro”, now under Searchlight Pictures and slated to star Glenn Close and Melissa McCarthy in the roles of a wealthy woman and her live-in housekeeper who must adapt after facing financial collapse. Another project is an adaptation of Ariel Leve’s memoir, “An Abbreviated Life”, with Rebecca Hall set to take on the lead role. On the acting side, Adlon will feature in “Mid-Century Modern”, a new multi-camera sitcom from the creators of “Will & Grace”, Max Mutchnick and David Kohan. This production, starring Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer, has been greenlit as a series by Hulu.

Adlon finds the show ‘Mid-Century Modern’ to be an authentic, classic TV experience – almost too good to be true. He’s thrilled about it and can hardly believe it, saying, ‘It’s incredibly gay, and it’s fantastic! It’s the most gay thing out there, and we could really use something like this now!’
