As a movie buff who’s seen his fair share of superhero flops and comebacks, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of anticipation as I look forward to the new year and the free streaming of ‘Spawn‘. This Image Comics character has always intrigued me, despite its disastrous 1997 adaptation. Mark A.Z. Dippé’s direction, while ambitious, was met with a cold shoulder by both critics and audiences alike.
One of the least favorably received superhero films ever made, and a character ripe for a fresh start, is set to be streamed for free next year. Originally brought to life by Todd McFarlane through Image Comics in the early 1990s, this character received its own live-action portrayal back in 1997…but it didn’t turn out too great.
Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, the film “Spawn” features action star and martial artist Michael Jai White in the lead role. Joining him are John Leguizamo, Martin Sheen, Theresa Randle, D. B. Sweeney, and Nicol Williamson. Upon its release, “Spawn” was panned by critics with a dismal 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received a disappointing score of 37% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. You can form your own opinion when it airs on on January 1. For now, here’s a summary of the movie’s plot.
“Covert government assassin Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is killed after being double-crossed by his boss, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). Upon arriving in Hell, Simmons is offered an opportunity to return to Earth if he’s willing to lead an evil army. He accepts, and is reincarnated as a “Hellspawn” — a twisted, horribly disfigured version of his former self. However, Spawn serves as a force of good, much to the dismay of the Devil’s henchman, a wicked clown (John Leguizamo).”
Roger Ebert Gave ‘Spawn’ a Near-Perfect Score
One critic, though, didn’t just like Spawn, he loved it. The legendary Roger Ebert awarded the bizarre comic book movie a monumental 3.5 out of 4 stars, Ebert advised the best way to watch Spawn in order to get the most from the experience.
The term ‘Spawn’ might be perceived as an avant-garde art film rather than a typical horror movie. Despite its appearance, complete with heavy special effects and a focus on teenage viewers, it could be received that way. However, it becomes more remarkable when you disregard the genre and focus solely on what unfolds on screen. Essentially, various artists in diverse fields are striving to break boundaries. The theme serves as a canvas for their artistic expression, much like it often does with serious artists.
The “Spawn” reboot appears to have been in development for quite a long time now. With Jamie Foxx set to play the lead character, details about the project remain unclear. Michael Jai White has expressed some queries and apprehensions regarding the reboot but is open to participating if asked.
“If I were asked to take part in it, I’d certainly give it my best shot. However, it appears that this project has been discussed for quite some time now, and Todd McFarlane seems to be at the forefront of those discussions. To be honest, I wasn’t clear about the rumors that he might direct it, as he hasn’t directed anything before, which struck me as unusual. Given the large budget involved, my best wishes go out to him for making such a decision.
