As a devoted fan and spectator of the dynamic world of entertainment, I find myself deeply saddened by the recent announcement of Paramount Television Studios’ closure. Over the years, this esteemed studio has graced our screens with captivating narratives that have not only entertained but also shaped our cultural landscape.
In response to significant cost-reduction measures at Paramount Global, Paramount Television Studios is ceasing operations. Originally established in March 2013 as a rebranding of Paramount Television, which was previously known as CBS Paramount Television following the separation between CBS and Viacom in 2005, the studio operated for 11 years. During this period, it produced popular series such as Jack Ryan, Reacher, The Offer, and the recent successful show Knuckles on Paramount+.
As reported by Deadline, Paramount Television Studios is being closed down as part of the cost-cutting measures announced by Paramount Global, impacting approximately 15% of the company’s workforce. Previously, Variety reported that Paramount Global aims to save $500 million before the end of 2024. In February, the team at Paramount Television Studios was let go due to cost-saving measures, and now, only six months later, the television division of the entertainment giant has been significantly impacted. All current series and development projects under the Paramount Television Studios banner will be transferred to CBS Studios, including their highly successful show “Reacher,” which is scheduled for Season 3 on Prime Video.
Nicole Clemens, President of Paramount Television Studios, released a statement to the staff:
It’s important to note that due to company-wide restructuring efforts, Paramount Global has chosen to shut down Paramount Television Studios. This decision has been made amidst a period of significant change across the industry, and unfortunately, our studio has also been affected by these transformations.
Over the last eleven years, PTVS has triumphantly overcome seemingly impossible hurdles, a feat achieved through a powerful blend of fortitude, dedication, and unwavering resolve. We’ve tackled these difficulties with remarkable tenacity, inventiveness, and an undying love for our work, which makes me immensely proud of our team. Furthermore, we’ve been fortunate to work alongside some of the brightest creative minds in the industry, helping bring captivating tales to life that have garnered global attention, providing both entertainment and influencing culture.
Despite Paramount Television Studios coming to an end, our values will persist through the shows that will continue to captivate audiences worldwide for many years. We’ve solidified our impact by nurturing some of the most significant, honored, and highly-appraised series during the streaming era, including “13 Reasons Why,” “The Offer,” “Defending Jacob,” “The Alienist,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Station Eleven,” “Time Bandits,” among others. We’ve set streaming platform records with “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” “Reacher,” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles.” Our forthcoming productions, “Cross,” “Before,” and “Murderbot,” promise to follow in their footsteps as successes. This remarkable chapter in my career is largely due to the extraordinary individuals I’ve had the privilege of working alongside and learning from every day. Thank you for standing by me, motivating me, and sharing laughter with me over the past six years — I couldn’t have asked for better comrades in arms.
As someone who has been through numerous challenges in my own business ventures, I can truly appreciate the leadership and support that George Cheeks has provided throughout this journey. Though parting ways may bring a few tears, it’s important to remember that running a business is like a marathon – a long-distance race with many twists and turns along the way. And just as in a marathon, we cross paths with various individuals who help us push forward, offering valuable guidance and encouragement. I am confident that our paths will intersect again, either collaboratively or through shared experiences. George, thank you for being an essential part of my journey thus far. Here’s to continued success!
In many cases, when you believe a chapter has closed, it’s actually the opening of another story.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Nicole
The Human Cost of Saving Money
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that Paramount Global’s upcoming merger with Skydance seems to be the reason behind Paramount Television Studios being closed down. Previously, these two entities have teamed up on shows like Jack Ryan, and it appears there’s some overlap that could benefit from consolidation. This isn’t a new story; it reminds me of when Disney bought 20th Century Fox and subsequently shuttered Blue Sky Animation Studio. They already had Walt Disney Animation and Pixar Animation on their roster.
Consolidation within corporations often results in a decrease of studios and production companies, which in turn leads to less job opportunities, making it harder for many individuals to secure employment. With a $500 million reduction necessary, it’s the employees who contributed to the profitability of these studios that are bearing the brunt of the cost. Despite Paramount Television Studios having been established just over a decade ago, it had carved out its own unique identity and provided work for many people, whose value is now being measured solely in terms of financial figures on a balance sheet.
George Cheeks, Co-CEO of Paramount Global and President & CEO of CBS, communicated in a memo to staff that alongside PTVS, some members of our CBS teams will be departing the company. These are esteemed colleagues whose skills and dedication have significantly shaped our success. I wish to express my sincere appreciation for their efforts, commitment, and valuable contributions. However, this announcement is undoubtedly disheartening news for many of our employees who are now facing job losses. These words may not fully alleviate the disappointment felt today.
