PARCO Pays Homage to the Art of Godzilla in New Group Exhibition

As a seasoned gamer and art enthusiast who’s spent countless hours battling virtual behemoths, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of visiting the GODZILLA THE ART exhibition at Tokyo’s PARCO MUSEUM. Having grown up with the iconic monster, witnessing the fusion of Godzilla and contemporary art is like seeing my childhood hero team up with my favorite artists – it’s a dream come true!

The PARCO MUSEUM in Tokyo is about to reveal a fresh group exhibition centered on Godzilla. This will be the fourth exhibit in their series themed around the iconic monster. The upcoming show will be curated by NANZUKA and features artwork from 15 international artists such as Roby Dwi Antono, Hiroki Tsukuda, Ryuichi Ohira, James Jarvis, and Tadanobu Asano. Each artist has crafted unique pieces exclusively for this special event.

Notable features encompass Haroshi’s towering dinosaur-like sculpture, fashioned from his distinctive mix of reclaimed skate decks, drawing inspiration from the iconic 1950s Godzilla movie. Meanwhile, British artist and filmmaker, Oliver Rix, enthusiastically embarked on a one-of-a-kind audio project, incorporating sounds from various Godzilla films. As stated by Oliver, “I created this piece with the assistance of my friend David Scott Stone, who has worked on sound production for Merzbow, Masonna, Melvins, among others.

Regarding Tetsuya Nakamura, the artist responsible for the exhibition’s key visuals, he aimed to honor the different versions of the colossal monster that preceded his work. Through a series of experiments, he ultimately chose a design emphasizing the beauty of the 1964 Godzilla’s form, both fearsome and cool, as his inspiration, while also amplifying his personal interpretation of Godzilla.

Accompanying the show is a unique commemorative figurine designed by Nakamura, which can be bought for ¥5,500 JPY or $36 USD at the museum during its exhibition. The exhibit titled “GODZILLA THE ART” will debut on Friday, November 29, 2024 and end on Monday, December 16, 2024.
