Warning: This discussion contains spoilers for Episode 2 of the second season of ‘Severance’. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can watch the series on Apple TV+. New episodes are released every Friday.
Miss Huang is one of the biggest surprises in Season 2 of “Severance,” and I managed to get the cast’s thoughts on her character.
Or:
Miss Huang has been a major shock in Season 2 of the hit show “Sverance”, and I was able to gather the actors’ opinions about her role.
Ms. Cobel, the character from “Severance,” continues to baffle me. I’ve been struggling to understand her intentions since season 1, and episode 2 of season 2 just deepened the mystery. Given the uncertainty surrounding her relationships with Lumon and Mark at the end of season 1, I’ve been pondering what her next steps would be. An unexpected turn of events occurred when she nearly ran over Adam Scott’s character, which was not one of my predictions. Yet, that’s exactly what transpired. Hearing Patricia Arquette‘s portrayal of her character’s mindset in that moment has given me a fresh perspective on her character.
Towards the close of Episode 2, Mark exits Lumon and observes Ms. Cobel departing from her residence. He promptly challenges her identity, expressing his surprise given their former mutual trust. Subsequently, Patricia Arquette’s character comments that Adam Scott’s character is “easily influenced,” as she recognizes he opted to remain at the enigmatic corporation they share a past with. It is then that Mark dashes in front of her car and barrages her with pressing questions in an attempt to uncover the truth about the situation.
If she refuses to answer any of the questions, Mark inquires if she has any information regarding Gemma. Instead of replying, Ms. Cobel gasps, yells, honks the horn and speeds off. This reaction is both alarming and unclear. During my interview with Arquette about her exceptional Apple TV+ series, I wondered what was running through her character’s mind at that moment. When asked, she responded:
In that particular scene, it appears she’s grappling with internal struggles. Her fury towards Lumon is evident, and she yearns to disclose certain secrets to him. Yet, she’s also disheartened by the prospect of losing their close bond and being unable to monitor his wellbeing. However, there remains a glimmer of hope within her that she might regain her previous standing. In essence, despite her anger and frustration, she still harbors loyalty towards Lumon at that moment.
I’ve often found myself puzzled by Cobel’s connections with Mark and Lumon. Generally, I thought she would remain faithful to the company, even after they treated her unfairly. However, Arquette hinted that she intends to inform Adam Scott’s character about what’s happening, suggesting a deeper bond between them than I had previously realized.
The conversation between Cobel and Helena at the outset of the episode lays an intriguing foundation for Cobel’s narrative, as she grapples with reassessing her loyalty in the upcoming events.
Regarding that moment involving Helena, in it, Britt Lower’s character expresses gratitude for Arquette’s efforts and loyalty, and proposes a return to work. Cobel counters by demanding an apology and the chance to manage the division that was severed. They find themselves at a standstill on this issue, and while considering Lumon’s proposal, Cobel adds: “I’ll ponder over it, but I also want an apology and control of that section.
You don’t value me. You fear me.
From this scene and her dialogue with Mark, it’s evident that Cobel appears to be contemplating her next action, and it’s intriguing indeed to learn that she seems uncertain about the best course of action.
From my initial perspective, Cobel appeared as a strong-willed and purposeful individual, leading me to believe she had a well-thought-out strategy. However, her response to Mark and Arquette’s explanation about the internal conflicts of her character has made me reconsider this assumption. As a result, I now view Ms. Cobel in an entirely different light.
I’m eagerly anticipating watching how her comprehension evolves as Severance unfolds in its 2025 television lineup. One thing is certain: this series always delivers twists and turns that nobody could foresee.
