As a long-time comic book fan and avid gamer with a soft spot for superhero stories, I’m beyond excited about the news that Netflix is developing “Minor Threats,” the offbeat and darkly comedic comic book co-created by Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum. The fact that Oswalt and Blum are involved in the project as writers, showrunners, and executive producers, alongside artist Scott Hepburn, only adds to my anticipation.

Netflix is working on turning the animated series into a live-action production. Patton Oswalt and Jason Blum are set to write, run the show, and act as executive producers. Scott Hepburn, who illustrated and co-created the original title, will also join the team as an executive producer. Sources report that the project is still in its initial stages of development.
Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg will serve as executive producers for Dark Horse Entertainment, the publishing company behind Umbrella Academy comic books. Dark Horse has an exclusive deal with Netflix, where the popular adaptation of their comic series is streamed.
As a longtime fan of quirky and unconventional takes on the superhero genre, I’m thrilled to see two shows like “Umbrella” and “Minor Threats” gracing our screens. Having grown up reading comic books and watching blockbuster movies that often followed formulaic storylines, I find these shows to be a breath of fresh air.
Instead of “The acerbic Minor Threats focuses on insignificant villains who are often left handcuffed in front of a police station, accompanied by a note that reads, ‘Compliments of your local Batman'” or “Minor Threats, with its biting wit, highlights the exploits of lesser baddies frequently apprehended by Batman and left at the precinct with a ‘Thank you from Gotham’s protector’ note.”
In an unexpected twist to the typical superhero tale, the story begins with the psychopathic Stickman taking the life of Kid Dusk, the sidekick of Twilight City’s leading crime-fighter, Insomniac. With Insomniac’s team on a mission to apprehend Stickman and restore order in the city, the lives of minor criminals are disrupted. A former villain now seizes this opportunity by placing a bounty on Stickman’s head and gathering a motley crew to hunt him down and claim the reward themselves.
The unconventional superhero comic book, titled “A Poke in the Eye,” published by Dark Horse in August 2022, gained unexpected popularity with its raw and intelligent approach to the superhero genre. Following the release of the initial storyline, a sequel emerged along with two spinoffs – one of which, named “Barfly,” was released earlier in July.
Netflix declined to comment.
Previously, Oswalt and Jordan were responsible for producing and overseeing Marvel’s stop-animation TV series “M.O.D.O.K” on Hulu. Blum also held a co-executive producer position in the animated comedy “American Dad.” Additionally, Oswalt is a versatile artist with numerous acting, stand-up, and writing credits under his belt.
