Regarding 2025 films, there’s plenty to look forward to, particularly with the upcoming A24 productions. As for one film that’s recently moved up my list, it’s the highly anticipated release of “Death of the Unicorn.” The latest trailer (you can watch it above) strikes a strange chord reminiscent of an iconic popcorn movie – “Jurassic Park.
Currently, “Death of the Unicorn” isn’t similar to the “Jurassic Park” films – instead, you can expect a “Jurassic Park”-like movie with the upcoming release of “Jurassic World Rebirth” this summer. Interestingly, “Death of the Unicorn” was one of the rare indie films produced during actor’s strikes. However, its new trailer brings to mind the qualities that made the original 1993 film captivating. It delves into the concept of a mythical creature and how humanity might inadvertently destroy its existence if given the chance to control it.
According to the preview, Paul Rudd’s character Elliot (alongside his on-screen daughter Ridley played by Jenna Ortega) inadvertently kills a unicorn during a car ride for Elliot’s work-related trip. Subsequently, when the unicorn’s body is discovered, the wealthy Leopold family, who employ Elliot, promptly decide to capitalize on the find, aiming to locate more of these magical creatures.

According to folklore, unicorns possess remarkable curative abilities, leading some to believe that hunting and exploiting these magical creatures is beneficial for humanity. However, their ignorance of the true nature of unicorns will prove costly as they encounter a vengeful unicorn during the course of the film, who seeks retribution for meddling with forces beyond human understanding.
I’m thoroughly captivated by films that delve into human nature and our capacity for darkness. Reminders of Jurassic Park abound in the trailer, not just in the themes, but also in certain scenes. For instance, when Chris Pratt’s character is dodging danger behind cars, or when the monster breathes on the character played by Jenna Ortega, it stirs memories of the kitchen scene where the raptor was so close to the children. The similarity to Alien is also evident, particularly in those moments. And, interestingly enough, her character’s name is Ripley, which certainly adds to the comparisons!

Upon learning one of the Leopolds stating it’s their “duty to collect all remaining ones,” my anticipation for Death Of A Unicorn grew even stronger. The trailers, including the one released two months ago on YouTube, suggest a movie brimming with offbeat humor and potentially exploring intriguing, if not unconventional, scenarios. Frankly, I may be more eager for this film, set to premiere March 28, than the upcoming Jurassic World installment due to its originality alone.
