Those paused Citadel spinoffs, Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana, are canceled.
Instead, the second seasons for each of those shows will simply become a part of the upcoming second season of the flagship series “Citadel,” as revealed by Amazon MGM Studios’ Head of TV, Vernon Sanders, on Wednesday.
Initially, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about the delay in the release of Citadel‘s second season and the postponement of its spinoffs. According to two reliable sources, high-ranking executives at Amazon MGM were dissatisfied with the plans for season two.
The series Citadel, which originated from AGBO under the direction of Joe and Anthony Russo, has had its spinoffs cancelled. This decision follows the departure of Jennifer Salke, who was deeply involved with the show as she was instrumental in bringing the idea for Citadel to the Russo Brothers, positioning it as Amazon’s equivalent to James Bond. However, with Amazon acquiring the rights to James Bond himself, it seems that Jen Salke is no longer part of the picture.
Here’s the full Sanders quote:
After conquering India and Italy in my gaming journey with “Citadel: Honey Bunny” and “Citadel: Diana,” I can’t wait for the second season of the main series, “Citadel.” Although the exciting international chapters won’t continue as standalone games, the upcoming Season 2 promises to be our most thrilling yet. With captivating storylines, fresh faces joining our stellar cast, and a cinematic vision that pushes boundaries, the new season will further immerse us in the emotional rollercoaster of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick as they face the formidable Manticore. I can hardly contain my excitement for the global premiere of Citadel Season 2 in Q2 of 2026!
The new logline for Citadel Season 2 reads as follows:
A month following the occurrences in the first season, our Citadel spies are hiding underground, pursued globally by Manticore agents. They’re coerced out of hiding to team up with an unusual group of spies when Paulo Braga, a Brazilian tycoon from Manticore, threatens to launch a devastating technological artifact, constructed by none other than Bernard Orlick from Citadel, onto the world.
Citadel was intended to be a flagship, global series for Prime Video. It never happened.
Since its inception, “Citadel” has faced numerous challenges – from costly reshoots and two conflicting edits during the initial season to crew departures. These factors bumped up the original $160 million budget by an additional $75 million, making it one of the priciest television series ever produced, surpassed only by Amazon’s “Rings of Power,” the “Lord of the Rings” TV adaptation. Despite these financial hurdles, it was still given a green light for a second season before its April 2023 debut.
