As someone who grew up in the ’80s, I can tell you that the nostalgia is strong with me when it comes to R-rated comedies about kids too young to see R-rated movies. The upcoming release of “Incoming” on Netflix reminds me of those good old days, and if you’re not afraid of a few f-bombs here and there, this could be a great late-summer comedy for us!
If you share my enthusiasm for the Olympics, you might be experiencing a bit of a letdown now that it’s over. For two glorious weeks, there was always something captivating to stream – from swimming races and gymnastics to handball, equestrian events, and even sport climbing. It seems like there’s a void where those sports used to fill our screens. But don’t worry, there are plenty of new shows and movies coming up on Netflix, Disney+, and other top streaming platforms. However, this week, some of the most promising content can be found on Peacock, offering both timeless classics and what promises to be the best new movie.
For nearly three decades, “Homicide: Life on the Street” has earned critical acclaim, yet it’s never been accessible via streaming services. That changes this week as the show finally premieres online. Furthermore, we have a fresh batch of both contemporary and timeless films and series set to grace various streaming platforms.
Homicide: Life on the Street – August 19 (Peacock)
Originally airing in 1993 and lasting for seven seasons with an additional TV movie, “Homicide: Life on the Street” is making its comeback this week on Peacock. For quite some time, you couldn’t stream “Homicide,” but now, with a subscription, you can access it all. Despite being highly praised by critics during its run, the show didn’t fare well in ratings. If you happen to be one of those who haven’t seen it, now is your chance to remedy that!
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the enduring impact of “Homicide” on television. This remarkable show not only brought the talented Andre Braughter into our living rooms, but also introduced us to the unforgettable Detective John Munch, brilliantly portrayed by the late Richard Belzer. Remarkably, this character lived on beyond the series itself, gracing our screens again and again in “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
Interview with The Vampire, And More AMC Series – August 19 (Netflix)
One of the problems caused by the popularity of streaming is that every studio wants its own cut of business. This has led a significant partitioning of content, leading all of us to likely be subscribing to multiple streaming services in order to get to watch all the shows and movies we care about.
Over the past few months, some Warner Bros. movies have become available on Netflix alongside Max, indicating a less stringent sharing policy. If you’re an admirer of various AMC series, such as “Preacher” or “Interview with the Vampire”, you can now enjoy them without needing a subscription to AMC+.
Approximately three dozen AMC television series, encompassing almost 30 seasons of viewing pleasure, will be available on Netflix starting August 19. For fans of “The Walking Dead,” who have already binge-watched the entire original series, as well as “Fear the Walking Dead” and the first season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” these shows are included in the transition.
That ’90s Show – August 22 (Netflix)
As a fellow gamer, diving into Netflix’s “That ’90s Show” feels like stepping right back into my ’90s childhood. If you’re yearning for the good old days of “That ’70s Show,” this new series sure does bring back a lot of familiar faces in an exciting new format that fans, including me, are loving. And if your nostalgia is all about the time when you first watched “That ’70s Show,” fear not! This show manages to capture that same vibe just as perfectly.
As a die-hard fan of ‘That ’90s Show’, I can hardly contain my excitement for this week’s release of the third batch of new episodes! Growing up in the ’90s, I spent countless hours watching reruns and developing an appreciation for the unique humor and cultural nuances that defined that era. The fact that Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, two icons of my youth, will be making guest appearances is a dream come true for me. This show holds a special place in my heart, so I’m eagerly awaiting this week’s installment to see how they weave their talent into the fabric of the series. It’s going to be a fun and nostalgic experience that I won’t soon forget!
Incoming – August 23 (Netflix)
Back in the 1980s, an era shrouded in myth, R-rated comedies featuring children who were not supposed to watch R-rated movies were quite common and often hilarious. Although such films have become less frequent over time, they still pop up occasionally and continue to be amusing.
As a former high school freshman who has seen my fair share of wild parties, I can tell you that this movie seems to capture the essence of that chaotic and unforgettable time in one’s life. If you enjoy a good laugh and don’t mind some strong language, then this could be an entertaining late-summer comedy for you. But if you prefer a more tame viewing experience, this might not be the movie for you.
City Of God: The Fight Rages On – August 25 (Max)
Having grown up watching movies from the 2000s, I must say that the news of a potential City of God sequel series has me absolutely thrilled! City of God was not just a film for me; it was an immersive experience that transported me to another world and left a lasting impact on my appreciation for cinema. If the creators are able to capture the same raw, gritty energy that made the original so powerful, this sequel series could be something truly special. I’m eagerly awaiting more details about this project and can’t wait to revisit the world of City of God once again!
The show takes place twenty years following the movie’s events, with the central figure Rocket reappearing in his old neighborhood, now established as a skilled photographer. Meanwhile, an ex-drug offender is freed from prison, causing the community to relive the harmful cycle they had previously experienced.
10 Cloverfield Lane – August 24 (Prime Video)
As August draws to a close, Halloween season is just around the corner! If you’re already eager for October, seize the opportunity as a top-quality thriller and the finest movie in the expanding Cloverfield series will be streaming this week exclusively for your Prime Video subscription.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays a character who experiences a car crash, regains consciousness in a shelter known as a bunker, and discovers that an apocalypse occurred outside. The question of whether the world beyond the bunker or within it is more terrifying becomes crucial to the storyline.
The Killer – August 23 (Peacock)
Mention the name John Woo’s “The Killer” to any diehard fan of action movies, and they will undoubtedly praise its greatness. This 1989 Hong Kong action film featuring Chow Yung-fat is the movie that brought both men to Hollywood’s attention. It’s almost inconceivable that anyone would even contemplate remaking it.
As a dedicated fan of action films, I’ve been following the career of John Woo for years, and his unique style has always set him apart from other directors. Growing up watching his movies, I marveled at the intricate choreography and emotional intensity he managed to infuse into every scene. So when I heard that “The Killer” is getting an American remake with a gender-swapped protagonist, my initial reaction was skepticism. However, upon learning that John Woo himself is producing and directing the project, my doubts were quickly alleviated. With his masterful storytelling abilities and knack for capturing raw emotion on screen, I’m confident that he will be able to recreate the magic of the original while also breathing new life into the story. I can’t wait to see what this legendary director has in store for us with “The Killer” remake!
As a dedicated movie and TV show enthusiast who has spent countless hours binge-watching various streaming platforms, I can confidently say that this upcoming week is shaping up to be a rollercoaster of entertainment. The plethora of fresh content about to hit these platforms is truly exciting, making it challenging to decide what to watch first. However, the prospect of September’s arrival and the subsequent changes in streaming content leaves me with a mix of anticipation and apprehension.
