The original series “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” by Peacock and Sky, featuring Colin Firth, has been facing increasing criticism from families of actual victims due to its portrayal of the events following the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, a representative of the Victims of Pan Am Flight 103 support group and a person who tragically lost her father, Frank Ciulla, in the December 1988 terrorist attack, has criticized the film Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, stating that it unnecessarily exaggerated the horrific airplane bombing.
In the initial installment, they opted to depict the devastating explosion of a Pan Am Boeing 747, caused by a bomb that claimed the lives of 270 passengers and staff members, among whom were 190 Americans. This choice could potentially rekindle the sorrowful memories of those directly affected by the tragedy.
Ciulla Lipkin firmly stated, ‘It’s a deliberate creative decision to present such scenes – like showing the bombing, filling in gaps with events before the plane exploded, displaying passengers singing Christmas carols, and portraying gruesome images of bodies falling – all for the purpose of attracting viewers to a TV show. However, that was my father’s experience. I don’t want to witness that, and I never should have to.’
Additionally, she disagreed with the restricted, five-episode series portraying a dramatic account solely from the viewpoint of real-life activist Dr. Jim Swire (played by Firth), without incorporating the opinions of other families who have similarly sought answers regarding the lingering enigma behind the tragic terrorist incident.
Ciulla Lipkin contends that dramatized accounts of history can be hazardous, particularly in a period when there’s so much false information circulating about our ecosystems. This includes misrepresentations of the Pan Am 103 bombing, which is disguised as an entertainment series and therefore contributes to the spread of such misinformation.
The Carnival Films miniseries showcases Firth’s character grappling with deeply ingrained convictions and loyalties as he embarks on a contentious, lengthy crusade for justice. This journey leads him to the sands of Libya, where he encounters Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, portrayed by Nabil Alraee, and to the Netherlands for the trial of convicted Libyan citizen Abdelbaset al-Megrahi (Ardalan Esmaili).
Ciulla Lipkin stated that she and her family disagree with the Lockerbie limited series incorporating Dr. Swire’s belief that al-Megrahi was not guilty of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing, despite his conviction for the crime. “One of the most disturbing statements in the series is when they suggest that al-Megrahi was the 271st victim of Pan Am Flight 103,” she emphasized, adding that such a statement was unnecessary.
Despite al-Megrahi’s conviction, various theories about who was behind the Pan Am 103 bombing have surfaced, including questions about ultimate responsibility for the terrorist act. The Peacock and Sky original series, however, is a joint production by Carnival Films (a division of Universal International Studios) and Sky Studios. Scottish playwright David Harrower serves as the main writer for this project.
The upcoming five-act play is set before the American court trial of Libyan citizen, Mas’ud al-Marimi, who stands accused of constructing the explosive that destroyed a Pan Am Boeing 747 during its flight from London to the United States.
Victoria Cummock, who lost her husband John Cummock in the Lockerbie disaster that claimed 270 lives, including 190 Americans, expressed strong criticism to THR, stating that the upcoming Peacock series, airing before the American criminal trial, is a narrow-minded, tactical and excessive attempt disguised as entertainment. This effort aims to sway the opinions of unaware viewers, plant seeds of doubt in potential jurors, and disrupt the path of U.S. criminal justice.
Speaking about the series, Cummock, founder and representative of the Pan Am 103 Lockerbie Legacy Foundation, stated that it “exaggerates one man’s skewed perspective while intentionally omitting any opposing viewpoints or conflicting facts. These perspectives have been documented in the narratives of over 35 years worth of stories from families of hundreds of other victims.”
This version aims to maintain the original meaning while making it easier to understand and read smoothly.
In response to criticism from families of the actual victims, Sky explained to THR that their series is grounded in the real-life account of Dr. Swire as depicted in his book co-authored with Peter Biddulph, “The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice.” They acknowledged that there are differing perspectives on the Lockerbie disaster and clarified that the series does not aim to provide a single, definitive version or draw any conclusions.
Sky explained their decision to present this tale through drama, stating that it’s a relatable format capable of shedding light on challenging and contemplative topics. Yet, they acknowledge the delicate nature of the subject matter and have taken great care and respect in its portrayal. Throughout production and prior to the series premiere, Sky worked closely with victims’ families and support groups. Additionally, each episode carries warnings for any content that might be distressing.
