Peacock’s ’Office’ Follow-Up Gets First Look and Title: ‘The Paper’

The next series in the Office world officially has a title — and a premiere date.

The program, where the film team from “The Office” switches focus to a fresh topic, goes by the title “The Paper“. This series centers around the publisher (Domhnall Gleeson) and employees of a financially stricken yet iconic newspaper in Toledo, Ohio.

The documentary crew from “The Office” changes subjects to “The Paper“, which follows the hardships of a historical but struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, led by its publisher (Domhnall Gleeson) and staff.

Both versions convey the same information but with slightly different structures and tones.

The comedy series created by Greg Daniels, formerly of “The Office,” and Michael Koman is due to make its debut in September. Peacock has unveiled the first look at this upcoming show, which features Oscar Nuñez returning as his character, Oscar Martinez, from the previous series.

On Monday, Nuñez, Gleeson, and Sabrina Impacciatore graced the stage during NBCUniversal’s presentation to advertisers. During this event, Nuñez shared that he conversed with Daniels about how, following The Office, he envisioned Oscar transitioning to a more diverse, urban setting.

According to Nuñez, Greg listened and relocated Oscar to Toledo, a city with around three times more residents than Scranton. It’s refreshing to know that one is being listened to,” says Nuñez.

Daniels shared with The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview for an Office retrospective that The Paper will utilize a significant portion of the same team that previously worked on the show, and he’s eagerly looking forward to collaborating on another mockumentary project.

The story revolves around a struggling Midwestern newspaper that’s seen better days. Many plotlines focus on the efforts of Domhnall Gleeson’s character to revive this paper, but he lacks the funds for hiring professional journalists. Instead, he relies on his existing staff, who are untrained and inexperienced, to take up reporting roles. Daniels finds the concept promising, as there’s a rich history behind local newspapers. The antagonist in this narrative is the internet, offering free news to everyone, which drains advertising revenue from these papers and funnels it towards companies like Google.

The show, titled The Paper, features Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key in its cast. Notable guest appearances include Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim, and Tracy Letts. In addition to starring, Ikumelo, Edelman, Rahill, and Welch are also credited as writers for the series.

Universal Television serves as the producer of the show. The team behind Nathan for You, which includes Daniels and Koman, also executive produces. Additionally, the creators of The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, join forces with Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas to contribute to the production.
