Pedro Pascal has since reflected on his past criticism of J.K. Rowling, who expressed opinions unfavorable towards the transgender community.
In April, the actor reacted to a social media post by activist Tariq Ra’ouf, who criticized J.K. Rowling for her support of a significant court decision in the UK that denied legal recognition of trans women as women and defined “sex” as biological sex.
J.K. Rowling stated, “It’s great when things work out as planned,” and further commented to her critic, “I receive the same royalties if you read my books or destroy them. Have fun with your s’mores!” (S’mores is a traditional campfire snack made with marshmallows.)
For his article on “Vanity Fair” magazine’s front cover, published on Tuesday, Pascal expressed that when his remark escalated into a bigger issue, it was similar to the feeling of “a child who frequently faced disciplinary actions in Texas public schools for misbehavior, experiencing fear and questioning ‘What have I done?’
What I struggled with a bit was whether I was truly making a difference,” he said, adding, “The situation calls for the highest level of grace and effectiveness so that real change can occur and people can be safeguarded.” Pausing, he continued, “I want to shield those I care about. But it’s more than that. The actions of bullies are abhorrent to me.
In 2021, Pascal’s sibling, Javiera Pascal (formerly known as Lux Pascal), publicly identified as a transgender woman. When Pascal spoke out about J.K. Rowling, his other sister, Javiera, stood up for him by saying to Vanity Fair, “Such behavior is indeed despicable and pathetic. And he made that statement as the older brother, protecting our sibling who was being invalidated by saying our transgender sister doesn’t exist.
During that period, supporters of Rowling attempted to justify her actions towards Pascal by claiming he was “overstepping boundaries with women,” referencing a widely shared video of Pascal holding Vanessa Kirby’s hand during the Fantastic Four panel at last year’s Comic-Con.
Kirby shared with Vanity Fair that the situation of performing in front of thousands who adore the comic left us both extremely anxious. He made sure to let me know we were united in this experience, which I appreciated as a kind gesture, and I was happy to reciprocate by squeezing his hand.
Regarding bullies and the upcoming movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” Pascal expresses a growing sense of enthusiasm, as he plays Mister Fantastic in the production. However, he acknowledges that his casting has sparked more dissatisfaction than any other role he’s had. Comments such as ‘He’s too old,’ ‘He doesn’t fit the part,’ and ‘He should shave’ are more common than usual for him.
He acknowledged Robert Downey Jr. as a source of comfort due to his quick generosity and warm welcome, making one feel at ease even in moments of fear, hunger, or indecision.
Simultaneously, Downey commented about Pascal to the media outlet, expressing that “Pascal’s gradual rise to fame and his current hot streak remind me of the strength and promise of our industry.
