As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for sports and a soft spot for immersive experiences, I can hardly contain my excitement about this partnership between NBC Sports and Imax! The idea of watching live college football games on the giant Imax screen is nothing short of mind-blowing.
NBC Sports and IMAX are teaming up for the very first time to broadcast a live college football game on massive movie screens.
On November 9th, the Penn State Nittany Lions will face off against the Washington Huskies at Beaver Stadium during their annual White Out game. This highly-anticipated event will be broadcast live in selected IMAX theaters and on Peacock. Ticketing for the Big Ten showdown at IMAX theaters is managed by Fandango.
In the realm of non-traditional sports broadcasting, Imax and NBCUniversal aired live coverage of the Olympic Games opening ceremony on July 26 in over 150 large-scale cinemas across the U.S., as ticketed events. This special event showcased musical performances by celebrities such as Celine Dion and Lady Gaga, who were displayed magnificently on Imax screens.
Imax is expanding its content portfolio beyond films, now including concerts, live broadcasts, and gaming tournaments. They’ve recently appointed Jonathan Fischer as their chief content officer to manage the strategic use of entertainment technology for Imax, focusing on blockbuster Hollywood movies, foreign films, and a variety of other diverse content.
In the aftermath of the pandemic’s impact on the broader film exhibition industry, Imax is expanding its portfolio beyond Hollywood blockbusters by incorporating local-language films from rapidly growing markets like China, India, Japan, as well as live concerts, comedy shows, and sports events that are popular in its expansive theaters.
Fischer is tasked with overseeing Imax documentaries, live events, and unique theatrical experiences stemming from music, games, and sports sectors.
Previously, NBC Sports debuted their Big Ten college football broadcast package last season, showcasing Big Ten games every Saturday night on both NBC and Peacock. Notably, the November 9 White Out game will only be accessible on the streaming platform, Peacock.
