People Are Discovering (Again) The Mom From Home Alone Was 36 When It Filmed, Only It Hits Way Harder For Me This Year

As a gamer who has clocked countless hours in virtual worlds and lived through multiple gaming generations, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of connection to Catherine O’Hara’s viral revelation about her age during the filming of Home Alone.

Occasionally, certain topics on the web gain popularity multiple times. Recently, the tidbit that’s been making waves again is the fact that Catherine O’Hara, famously known as Kevin McCallister’s mom in the classic ’90s film “Home Alone”, was only 36 years old when she portrayed the character. It’s not the first time this piece of trivia has trended online, but it’s the first time I find myself truly astonished by it.

In essence, for several years during the Christmas season, tweets often recall that Macaulay Culkin’s character’s mother, played by Catherine O’Hara, was 36 when filming “Home Alone.” It’s been 34 years since the movie was released, and O’Hara is now 70. Regardless, at the time, it was unusual for her to have a daughter who was 15 (in high school) and five children in total. Though family structures can resemble this today, things were different back then.

It wasn’t so long ago O’Hara and Macaulay Culkin went viral when they reunited during his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. The moment went viral, and of course people started talking about the Home Alone mom again. Then, Buzzfeed recently put together a list comparing celebrities at age 36 based on the viral moment between the famous movie mother and her famous movie son (who is now 43–aka seven years older than O’Hara was when the flick filmed). But I’m having my own personal meltdown in regards to the topic.

At present, I’m 36 years old and have experienced grown-up responsibilities such as repaying student loans and buying a house. However, I don’t resemble the character in the movie who has multiple children, large assets, or gets lost in Paris like Mrs. McCallister. While it’s amusing to joke about her negligence, this realization that our lives are so different from the movie scenario has been quite a sobering thought for me.

Instead of feeling all by myself, I’ve found comfort in numerous videos about this very subject. One video, in particular, captures exactly what I’m experiencing right now.

As a gaming enthusiast, let me tell you about my current mood: It’s like Jake Peralta when he’s trying to crack a case, but the pieces just aren’t falling into place. You know that determined, yet slightly frustrated look on his face? Yeah, that’s me right now. And if you think about it, it’s kind of fitting because just like how each episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has its ups and downs, my gaming journey is filled with victories and setbacks too. As a gamer putting myself in the shoes of Macaulay Culkin or Leslie Mann (O’Hara), I could say something like: “When we met up again, you might recall me confessing my past oversights as a film mom. I felt compelled to share that with you directly.”

Macaulay, heartfelt congratulations! Your hard work has truly earned you a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s a joy to be part of this celebration with you, my dear ‘stand-in mom’, who left me behind not just once, but twice. I’m filled with pride for your achievements.

Although Catherine O’Hara may not have won ‘Mom of the Year’, she is undeniably a renowned figure beyond her performances in Home Alone, solidifying herself as a comedy great in diverse roles such as spearheading the cast of Schitt’s Creek and starring in numerous Christopher Guest projects. However, one particular tidbit about her stands out to me, much like how I recall that one high school student who never changed their gym socks because they never changed them – it’s the one detail that lingers in my memory years later. My condolences to O’Hara, who has undoubtedly uttered countless humorous lines throughout her life.
