People Won’t Stop Buying Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

For its entire lifespan, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has remained the top-selling Nintendo Switch game, which is hard to believe given it started as a simple port from the Wii U with added features that weren’t heavily promoted during the initial reveal of their new console. It seems likely that Nintendo aims for Mario Kart 9 to outperform sales on the next system.

User Knoebel recently disclosed the top-selling exclusive games for Nintendo Switch, emphasizing the significant impact this console has had on these popular franchises. Although it wasn’t entirely unexpected, the fans were taken aback to learn that the eighth installment of Mario Kart is still leading in sales with an astounding 67.35 million units sold.

It’s quite amusing how well Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has outperformed the original console it was ported from, the Wii U. Given that Nintendo views the Wii U as a flop due to its limited sales of around 13.56 million units, it’s somewhat awkward to realize that a game from this underperforming console has been sold more than four times over, which is the total number of Wii U consoles ever sold.

It’s clear that Nintendo has strategically positioned the Deluxe version to be a top seller for its latest system. Often, it comes packaged with different Switch models during Black Friday promotions, attracting new fans who purchase both the game and console at the same time. Interestingly, when Nintendo occasionally discounts their games, this kart racing title is typically among those on sale.

The phenomenal success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe led Nintendo to produce additional downloadable content for it, known as the Booster Course Pass. This expansion pack introduced an impressive 48 new tracks into the game, with some tracks borrowed from Mario Kart Tour, and 8 extra playable characters. Notably, a physical edition of the game bundled with this DLC was also released, undeniably contributing to its overall sales.

Since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe surpassed Wii U sales yet again, everyone is eagerly anticipating Mario Kart 9. With a larger unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 scheduled for April, we’ll soon have more details about its release.
