‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Nabs (Very) Early Season 3 Renewal at Disney+

Disney+ is giving Percy Jackson and the Olympians an early start on its future.

The showrunner has decided to continue the series, inspired by Rick Riordan’s five-book series, in its third installment. This decision was made before the second season even airs; Disney+ announced that season two of Percy Jackson will be released in December, marking a gap of two years since the first season premiered.

As soon as the series ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ was released, it resonated deeply with people of all ages,” Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, stated. “With season two coming out this December, we’re excited to share that Percy’s story will carry on into a third season. We’d like to extend our gratitude to our exceptional cast and creative team, our collaborators at 20th Television, and our brilliant producers who are masterfully transforming Rick Riordan’s universe onto our screens with such rich detail and creativity.

Starting the production of the third series earlier may enable the writing team and production staff to reduce the gap between seasons, as shared by co-showrunner Jonathan E. Steinberg during a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

Steinberg mentioned earlier this month to THR that part of continuing the process involves being prepared and knowing how to handle discussions, along with having a plan ready. He had hoped that they’d return to Vancouver, where the series is filmed, sooner rather than later.

In the upcoming Season three, we’ll be adapting “The Titan’s Curse,” the third novel from Rick Riordan’s series, as our foundation. This season will also introduce one of the beloved characters, Nico di Angelo, a young demigod making his debut at Camp Half-Blood.

We’re thrilled to carry on the tale of Percy Jackson over at Disney+,” Riordan expressed in a statement. “The third season will explore uncharted territory for the screen, introducing beloved characters such as the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo for the first time. This commitment from Disney underscores their excitement, reflecting the passionate reception the series has received from fans worldwide. A big thank you to all demigods everywhere!

In the first season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” 16 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards are up for grabs (to be presented this coming Saturday). Additionally, the series has garnered significant attention on Disney+, logging more watch time (according to Nielsen) than any other show on the platform outside of Marvel and Star Wars franchises.

In the second season, we’ll see Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, and Daniel Diemer as the main cast members. Some new faces joining the crew are Tamara Smart, Andra Day, Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, Margaret Cho, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Aleks Paunovic, along with others. Courtney B. Vance is stepping into the role of Zeus, previously played by the late Lance Reddick.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians series was developed by Riordan and Steinberg. Steinberg, Dan Shotz, Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Craig Silverstein, Bert Salke, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein from The Gotham Group, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Albert Kim, Jason Ensler, and Sarah Watson are all involved in its production as showrunners and executive producers.
