As a long-time theater enthusiast and avid gamer of both virtual and live productions, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear about this upcoming revival of “Twelfth Night” at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The announcement that Peter Dinklage, Lupita Nyong’o, Sandra Oh, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson will be joining the cast is just icing on the cake!
Peter Dinklage, Lupita Nyong’o, Sandra Oh, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson are among the actors joining the cast for the upcoming revival of “Twelfth Night” at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park.
In August 2025, Saheem Ali, The Public Theater’s resident director, will oversee the staging of a new production. This event is scheduled to unfold at the Public Theater’s open-air venue, which has been undergoing renovations since last autumn. Operated by The Public Theater and providing complimentary tickets for attendance, this theater typically hosts its Free Shakespeare in the Park events.
In the given production, Dinklage is cast as Malvolio, Nyong’o takes on the role of Viola, Sandra Oh portrays Olivia, and Ferguson is set to play Andrew Aguecheek.
Ali expressed how much he loves “Twelfth Night,” describing it as a source of great joy for him. He shared that his first theatrical experience was watching this play at The Delacorte, during his college years, using public transportation from Boston. He’s thrilled to be collaborating with his cherished friend Lupita Nyong’o and fellow Public Theater veterans Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Sandra Oh. Ali is grateful for the opportunity to direct this production as they reopen The Delacorte following an extensive renovation. Free Shakespeare in the Park is a precious gift to our city, he added.
I’ve had the privilege of witnessing this Shakespearean comedy being brought to life at The Delacorte for the seventh time. In the past, some remarkable actors graced the stage – Jeff Goldblum, Anne Hathaway, Audra McDonald, Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Stiles, and Michael Stuhlbarg, among others, were part of the casts in 1969, 1986, 1989, 2002, 2009, and 2018 productions. Each time I attended, their performances left me in awe.
The outdated theater, constructed in 1962 with last significant improvements in 1999, is undergoing a major transformation. This involves tearing down old seats, risers, and the facade, as well as addressing underlying structural problems within the building. Furthermore, enhancements are being made to interior areas and the theater’s layout to ensure easier access for all viewers.
Every summer, Shakespeare in the Park presents classic Shakespearean plays to the public, such as “The Merry Wives of Windsor” in 2021. Additionally, they produce a Public Works show where local New York amateurs participate as actors and artists.
During the autumn season, progress on the project will carry on. This includes putting up new lighting structures, enhancing the grandstand seating areas, and installing a fresh wood exterior using repurposed New York City water towers. Additionally, the restroom is in the process of being renovated.
