Some people might consider choosing a favorite “Lord of the Rings” movie to be quite an extraordinary task. However, much like embarking on any heroic journey, such as planning your 2025 movie lineup, there are those who are bold enough to tackle the seemingly impossible. Peter Jackson, director and producer of the “Middle-earth Saga”, has taken up this challenge, effectively declaring his favorite film in the trilogy. While I must admit respect for such a decision, I personally find myself at odds with it.
Peter Jackson’s Pick For His Favorite Lord Of The Rings Film
During an interview with Letterboxd, Jackson discussed the latest release of “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” by reminiscing about his past involvement with the franchise. Reflecting on his initial fervor that led him to adapt a seemingly impossible story, the director of “King Kong” revealed that he isn’t particularly fond of rewatching his own productions. Yet, he did reveal which installment of the original trilogy was his favorite, adding an important disclaimer:
The Two Towers, I think. But if I see them again I might have a totally different one.
It’s particularly fitting that this topic resonates given the outlet listed the Lord of the Rings films among their top choices for movies people frequently re-watch during Christmas. This coincidence adds a certain poignancy, considering Peter Jackson’s reluctance, while it seems fans are eager to repeatedly visit J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of courage in Middle Earth.
Simultaneously, the fact that the creator of “The Frighteners” encourages fans to continue enjoying the movies is another heartwarming indication of his commitment. However, I must diplomatically disagree with him choosing “The Two Towers” as the best installment. In a roundabout way, this sounds like something Peter Jackson might appreciate, provided it’s done in the spirit of shared enjoyment.
Why The Return Of The King Is The One True Best Middle-Earth Saga Movie
To clarify, I’m not implying that “The Fellowship of the Ring” or “The Two Towers” are poorly made films. From the very start, I was captivated by Peter Jackson’s “Middle-earth Saga,” and I’m also a fan of the “Hobbit” trilogy, despite the fact that I feel it would have been better as just two movies. However, it is “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” that stands out to me as exceptional – primarily because it wraps up all those themes so masterfully.
Twenty years after its release, the grand finale of this series continues to shine brightly in my memory, standing out as one of the most impressive climaxes a trilogy has ever delivered. Even considering the ongoing debates about the multiple endings in The Return of the King, it’s remarkable. The powerful speeches, the captivating Howard Shore score, and the stunning visuals ensured no stone was left unturned, which is quite a feat for a third installment in any franchise, especially one that broke box office records set by Fathom Events two decades later.
Personally speaking as a film enthusiast, I find it challenging to single out my favorite chapter from “The Lord of the Rings.” Each piece contributes to the overall intricate narrative, creating a stunningly cohesive whole that leaves me in awe. However, I understand the allure of debate over our beloved pieces of this cinematic puzzle. Let’s hope this discussion continues and that people will keep revisiting the grandeur that Peter Jackson and his team bestowed upon us when they embarked on what seemed an impossible feat: bringing Middle-earth to life on the big screen.
