It’s hard to deny that the trilogy known as “The Lord of the Rings,” directed by Peter Jackson, is one of the greatest fantasy adaptations ever made. These movies grossed almost $3 billion at the box office and won 17 Academy Awards. Even twenty years after the release of the last film, “The Return of the King,” they continue to have a significant impact on cinema. As for which movie Jackson prefers most among the three, that’s like asking a parent to choose their favorite child.
In a recent chat with Letterboxd, Jackson was queried about his favorite Lord of the Rings movie. Among the trio – The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King – he chose The Two Towers, a film that has garnered favor among critics. However, the director from New Zealand acknowledged that his answer might vary based on his mood if asked on a different day.
The Two Towers, I think. But if I see them again, I might have a totally different one.
Among the trilogy on Rotten Tomatoes, The Two Towers stands out with a 95% rating from critics, followed closely by The Return of the King at 94%. The Fellowship of the Ring ranks third with a 92% score. For now, it seems like Peter Jackson’s preferred installment is the second one, as he admitted that he seldom rewatches his own films. “I can’t watch my own movies,” he stated, hinting that he might find enjoyment in them again at a later time, expressing hope that you will too!
‘The Lord of the Rings’ Saga Will Continue in 2026
Despite the anime movie “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” receiving mixed reviews from both fans and critics, as well as minimal box office success, our focus now shifts to the year 2026 when “The Hunt for Gollum” is slated for release. This project was initially unveiled in May 2024, with Peter Jackson serving as a producer, and Andy Serkis taking on the role of director.
So far, not much has been revealed about the storyline of the upcoming film, except that it may be based on discussions between Frodo and Gandalf in “The Fellowship of the Ring,” focusing on how Gandalf’s investigation into the One Ring led him to locate Gollum. It is anticipated that original actor Sir Ian McKellan will reprise his role as Gandalf, and he hinted back in September that instead of one movie, there would be two. “I was told it’s two films,” he said. “I shouldn’t really be saying that. I haven’t seen the script yet, and I don’t know when it will be released or where it will be filmed.
While we wait for updates about when production starts for “The Hunt for Gollum“, why not revisit the classic “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, currently streaming on Max? If you’re a devoted fan and eager to delve deeper into this magical world, you can also catch the entire “The Hobbit” trilogy there too.
