‘Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare’ & ‘Poohniverse’ Is “Something for Everyone”

Curious horror enthusiasts are eager to understand how the Poohniverse (often called the Twisted Childhood Universe, created by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Jagged Edge Productions) will stand apart from well-known horror series. In a chat with ComicBook.com, Scott Chambers, writer and director of the upcoming Poohniverse production titled “Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare“, shared some insights. It appears that this franchise won’t follow the same pattern as the Conjuring universe or pit two worlds against each other like in Freddy vs. Jason.

Furthermore, Chambers notes that his film, titled “Neverland Nightmare, deviates significantly from the two previous Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey movies. Unlike those films which depict slasher killers in animal masks, this new project leans more towards psychology, drawing comparisons with Scott Derrickson’s indie horror success, “The Black Phone“. He explained:

…”In the spirit of Peter Pan and the Poohniverse in general, each tale will offer a fresh experience compared to the last, catering to various audiences. This resembles the ‘Conjuring’ universe, as when you watch a ‘Conjuring’ movie, whether it’s ‘The Nun’ or any other film from that series, you have an idea of what to expect – there won’t be deaths, but it will maintain a specific tone and mood with some effective jump scares. As a horror enthusiast, I aim to create a universe where everyone, regardless of their background, can engage without feeling excluded.

Chambers made his point clear by explaining that if the eerie atmosphere of the ‘Blood and Honey’ movies didn’t appeal to some viewers, they might prefer ‘Neverland Nightmare’, as it presents a distinct tone despite being set in the same universe.

‘Neverland Nightmare’ Is the Lynchpin to the Entire Poohniverse

In a different yet understandable way, the ominous and profound atmosphere of “Neverland Nightmare” serves a dual purpose. The Pan character in this film is slated to become the primary antagonist in “Poohniverse: Monster’s Assemble”, an upcoming movie inspired by the Avengers, where Pooh and his band of dangerous companions will make appearances, along with Jagged Edge’s terrifying portrayal of everyone’s beloved marionette-turned-real boy. Furthermore, the main villain from “Pinnochio: Unstrung” is also expected to appear. Chambers further explained:

…”Besides making the tone bleak and darker for this series, I want viewers to have specific feelings towards these characters by the time they reach Poohniverse. With each new film, their introduction will help create a cohesive picture of who you’ll connect with most. This connection becomes even stronger when we get to the final film, much like how in ‘Freddy vs. Jason‘, viewers find themselves rooting for Jason over Freddy.

Chambers further explains that although there may not be enough time to change viewer allegiances like in “Freddy vs. Jason”, due to the multitude of villains in “Poohniverse”, viewers will discern a distinct pecking order of wickedness within the movie, as they’ve witnessed in other films of the TCU series.
