As a gamer with a soft spot for music and a deep appreciation for global issues, I can’t help but feel inspired by Pharrell Williams’ journey. Born from humble beginnings and rising to become a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, he serves as a beacon of hope for those who dare to dream big. His life story echoes the spirit of many video games we play – overcoming obstacles, making allies, and ultimately saving the world.
Musician and multitalent Pharrell Williams has been appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNESCO. In his new role, he spoke to an audience of approximately 800 students at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, where he graciously received this distinction.
He told the audience in his speech, “I never dreamed in 51 years that I would be standing at a podium like this, in a building like this.” Later in his speech, he discussed the fragility of humanity, stating, “We are at a crisis as a species.” He adds, “I’m betting on the youth. I’m betting on the kids. I’m betting on all the people who’ve been marginalized for so long, generationally, to stand up, band together and realize that we’re so much stronger when we pull together,” he said. “It’s never too late to start thinking about what your dream is, because your dream can pull you out of a very tough situation…When you dare to dream, I promise you can do it. Just do it piece by piece.”
Audrey Azoulay, head of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), stated that Pharrell Williams, a goodwill ambassador for UNESCO, transcends traditional diplomacy. This marks the first time an American citizen has been appointed as a goodwill ambassador since the U.S. rejoined UNESCO last year. During his speech, Pharrell expressed gratitude for the many blessings in his life, attributing them to hard work, community, and collaboration – values he associates with UNESCO’s mission. He emphasized that there are forces that exploit negativity and widening differences to sow division and fear among us. However, Pharrell has witnessed firsthand the strong connections and interdependence between people from diverse cultures, cities, and countries. His goals as a goodwill ambassador include advocating for education systems that level the playing field for underprivileged children and adults, aiming to eliminate opportunities based on one’s origins.
