Philippa Boyens Shared With Me How The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim Made That Posthumous Christopher Lee Cameo Happen

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth Saga never ceases to impress me. In my humble opinion, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim stands as an exceptional addition to this already legendary franchise.

It slipped my mind that Sir Christopher Lee, who passed away, would make a posthumous appearance in “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” in 2024, but when I finished the first installment of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth Saga, it was a delightful surprise to recognize that voice again. It turned out that the choice to resurrect Saruman in “The War of the Rohirrim” was made early on, and it was inspired by a question posed by producer Philippa Boyens.

During a virtual meeting with Ms. Boyens, representing TopMob for our attendance at The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’s press day, I managed to uncover the complete narrative behind the events. To start off this fascinating story, here’s what Philippa Boyens shared as the motivation for reintroducing Saruman in the storyline:

…One question that came up for us was: which characters from the live-action movies could feasibly fit into this narrative? We only found one character who could, and that is Saruman. When I approached Peter at the start of our project, one of our goals was to create a self-contained tale, a story that doesn’t require any references to the One Rings or Dark Lords…

Discussing The War of the Rohirrim, which occurred approximately 200 years before the events depicted in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it was clarified by the producer and co-story writer that Sauron makes an appearance around this time in J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythos. This connection to the world of humanity within a ringless saga serves as a fascinating link for fans of The Lord of the Rings films.

To carry out our plan, we needed to find a way to incorporate Sir Christopher Lee’s voice again. As we delved deeper into this issue, Philippa Boyens outlined the subsequent actions that followed:

Peter had a very strong sense that he felt that Chris Lee would’ve wanted to do it. And so we then went to [Lee’s wife, Gitte Lee], who was still alive then, and asked her, and she said exactly the same thing. … I was a bit daunted, because I was thinking, ‘How are we gonna construct this line using his actual voice?’ And then I remembered that one line in The Hobbit, where he turns up at the White Council fighting the Necromancer, where he says ‘Are you in need of assistance, my lady?’ And so we use that as the basis of this line.

It’s true that some people might suspect AI was involved, but it seems only creative sound editing was employed here, much like how Paul Newman’s character was brought back for ‘Cars 3’ in 2017. Despite Sir Christopher Lee’s brief appearance in “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim“, Saruman’s presence serves as a seamless link to the subsequent films, enhancing their legacy. Throughout the process of maintaining this tradition of high-quality adaptations, the aim of this animated saga was always carefully preserved and pursued.

Instead of delving into the already known history of Rohan’s second royal line, we choose to emphasize the untold battles and human resilience that define it. This is exactly what awaits you in the current theater release titled “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim“. After all, when would be a better time to present an epic like this than during the season for such tales?

If these epic tales spark your interest, you’ll be thrilled to know that you can now stream the entire six-film saga of Peter Jackson’s live-action masterpiece – both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies – as they are bound together by a Max subscription! Enjoy the journey!
