As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the intricacies of cinematic storytelling and the creative minds behind them, I can’t help but feel a pang of curiosity and a touch of melancholy whenever I think about George Miller’s abandoned Justice League: Mortal. Having witnessed the breathtaking spectacle that was Fury Road, it’s not hard to imagine what a visionary like Miller could have done with a superhero ensemble.

17 years ago, I was excited when Warner Bros. asked George Miller to direct “Justice League: Mortal,” but that never came to fruition. Fast forward to 2015, and as a huge fan, I eagerly awaited the return of Miller to the Mad Max franchise with Fury Road. Now, thanks to filmmaker Ryan Unicomb, we get another peek at what could have been if Miller’s Justice League project had gone through. Unfortunately, Miller’s latest, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, didn’t do well at the box office, and Unicomb, who was working on a documentary about it back then, has moved on to other projects in Hollywood marketing.

Earlier this week, Unicomb posted pictures on Instagram from his collection, featuring the late actor Hugh Keays-Byrne, known for playing Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road. Tragically, he passed away in 2020. The images showcase his transformation into J’onn J’onzz, also known as Martian Manhunter, one of the founding members of the Justice League, which was planned for Miller’s aborted movie. You can see these photos below.

In 2017, the movie “Justice League,” directed by Miller, was intended to launch a new series for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Following the disappointing box office performance of “Superman Returns,” they sought to revitalize their approach, with the idea of a sequel no longer feasible. Instead, they aimed to assemble the comic book characters in one film before spinning off individual movies for each hero. However, things took an unexpected turn, starting with Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” in 2013, and eventually leading to the creation of “Justice League.”

This Isn’t Our First Look at George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal

In addition to Keays-Byrne, Miller’s “Justice League: Mortal” was planned to feature D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Adam Brody as The Flash, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, hip hop artist Common as Green Lantern, Teresa Palmer as Talia al Ghul, and Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord. Over the years, numerous photos have been shared – primarily by Unicomb – offering glimpses into what Miller’s movie would have appeared like on the big screen.

As a passionate cinephile, I often ponder if George Miller’s abandoned project, Justice League: Mortal, would have outshone the Snyder version that emerged a decade later. Alas, we can only speculate as the movie never saw the light of day. However, delving into online resources allows us to piece together the storyline and form our own opinions. For now, all we can do is marvel at what could have been had Miller been granted full creative control over his “crazy f*cking fever dream,” as described by Baruchel in 2021.
