Actress Pilar Del Rey, most notably recognized for her role in “Giant” as the Mexican mother whose premature baby later became the tragic war hero portrayed by Sal Mineo, passed away at the age of 95.
Del Rey died Sunday in Los Angeles of natural causes, her family announced.
For over four decades, Del Rey has graced numerous films beyond just one. Some of these include “The Ring” from 1952, featuring Rita Moreno; “And Now Miguel” in 1953, with Michael Ansara and Pat Cardi; “The Siege at Red River” in 1954, alongside Van Johnson and Joanne Dru; and “Black Horse Canyon” from the same year, starring Mari Blanchard and Race Gentry.
In George Stevens’ 1956 film “Giant”, actress Elsa Martinelli plays Mrs. Obregón, whose child, Angel, receives care due to Elizabeth Taylor’s kind-hearted character Leslie Benedict. Leslie’s spouse, Bick (portrayed by Rock Hudson), doubts that their family physician should treat “those people”. It is important to note that Mrs. Obregón’s husband, played by Victor Millan, serves as the Benedicts’ chauffeur.
Del Rey was born on the 26th of May, 1929, in Fort Worth, Texas. At the age of 11, she and her family moved to Hollywood, where she later attended Hollywood High School.
She first appeared on screen in the movie “Johnny Stool Pigeon” (1949), taking on roles as Latino characters in films like “The Kid From Texas” (1950) and “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima” (1952). Additionally, she played these characters in episodes of “The Adventures of Kit Carson” and “Have Gun — Will Travel”.
She appeared on a variety of TV series, such as Hopalong Cassidy, Sea Hunt, Fireside Theater, Daniel Boone, Family Affair, My Three Sons, The Wild Wild West, Police Story, Mannix, Barnaby Jones, Hart to Hart, Simon & Simon, and numerous others.
Her final onscreen appearance came in The Forbidden Dance (1990).
In 1995, Del Rey, who had become a member of SAG in 1949 and AFTRA in 1955, was celebrated at the first-ever AFTRA/SAG Latino/Hispanic Heritage Event. Actor Ricardo Montalbán acknowledged her significant impact on the entertainment industry during this occasion.
Three nephews, whom she treated as her own children, are among the survivors. Nephew David Bouzas said, “Auntie Mame,” as she was fondly known, will always be cherished for her generosity and love.
