Pillars of Eternity Is Getting Turn-Based Combat This Year

This year, Obsidian Entertainment plans to introduce a complete turn-based battle system for the game, Pillars of Eternity, towards its end.

They’re rolling out this new gameplay option as a big update for the game’s 10th anniversary.

Modeled after the resurgence of classic isometric role-playing games like Baldur’s Gate, Pillars of Eternity emphasizes real-time combat with a pause feature. This fighting style aligns well with its traditional origins, however, it has evolved significantly in more recent times.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, we witnessed an exceptional demonstration of turn-based mechanics fitting perfectly within a fantasy backdrop. It appears that Obsidian is preparing to replicate this success in their upcoming title.

As a dedicated gamer immersed in the realm of Eora, it’s no secret that I’ve been keeping an eye on the development of Avowed. The buzz surrounding this upcoming title, set within the same universe as Pillars, has undeniably rekindled excitement about our beloved game world. It’s almost unbelievable to think that a game many believed had reached its last major update years ago is now back in focus. The anticipation is real!

Back in 2018, I got hooked on Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire with its real-time combat, but the game developers surprised us all by introducing a turn-based mode later down the line. This update was a breath of fresh air for many gamers like myself, adding a new layer of strategy to the sequel that significantly altered both its pacing and tactics.

In a new twist, Pillars of Eternity continues its journey down a familiar path, yet this time with an even bolder strategy. The characters’ actions are determined by their turn order, which is affected by factors such as the weight of their gear and their recuperation rate.

The coincidence adds to the surprise since Obsidian Entertainment has multiple significant projects in progress simultaneously, including the full rollout of Avowed and the forthcoming Outer Worlds 2.

Despite its age, the studio continues to put money into a game that’s been around for over a decade. Additionally, Obsidian released an update for Pillars, addressing some technical issues, refining dialogues, enhancing questlines, and making minor yet significant improvements.

As a seasoned gamer who’s played their fair share of RPGs, I can confidently say that longtime fans should definitely revisit the captivating world of Pillars of Eternity. For those fresh off completing Baldur’s Gate 3, this could not be a more opportune moment to dive in and explore!

Looking back a full ten years since its debut, I can confidently say that my passion for the realm of Pillars of Eternity remains as vibrant as ever with Obsidian Entertainment at the helm.
