In acknowledgement of the 8,000-strong Women’s March held in Park City back in 2016, Erin Brown Thomas and her production, titled Chasers, staged an impromptu performance on Main Street.
A group of people donning pink hats marched through Sundance this year, echoing a memorable demonstration that occurred at the festival and various cities globally after the initial inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016.
On a sunny Sunday, a vibrant ensemble of dancers adorning hot pink headgear performed an orchestrated dance on Main Street outside the Egyptian Theater. This impromptu display was a lively celebration for the premiere of the one-shot, half-hour comedy television series pilot, Chasers, which was being unveiled at the festival. The flash mob was filled with numerous members from the cast and crew of Chasers.
In the course of the flash mob event, participants distributed pins displaying various phrases like “Struggling artist yearning for attention,” “Thankful I’m attractive,” “Polite, mature individual,” and “Currently struggling, Pursuing dreams.
As a fan, I’d put it this way: “In ‘Chasers’, I found myself reflected as a young, urban creative, eagerly pursuing my dreams but sometimes unknowingly courting my own exploitation. The movie skillfully contrasts the warning signs in romantic relationships with the grind of breaking into an industry where everyone’s striving to make it.
When inquired whether the pink hats in the pilot held symbolic significance related to the 2016 Women’s March, director Thomas replied, “I don’t want to reveal too much about the pilot just yet… However, there is a subtle hint in that regard, yes. There are indeed topics within it that will be explored further in [the series].
During Sundance in 2016, about 8,000 individuals gathered in Park City, as reported by local authorities back then. Notable figures such as Chelsea Handler, Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Aisha Tyler, among others, were part of this large crowd that attended the Women’s March.
