Pixar’s New Inside Out Show Looks Amazing, But There's Something I'm Still Very Confused By

As a die-hard Pixar fan and someone who has been through countless emotional rollercoasters with their movies, I can confidently say that Dream Productions is shaping up to be an absolute gem! The trailer, which finally dropped three weeks before its premiere, has me beyond excited for this limited series.

Fans eagerly anticipating a Pixar-produced television show finally have something to look forward to, as “Win or Lose” was initially slated for this distinction since 2020. However, plans have shifted, and it’s now the spin-off series from “Inside Out“, produced by Dream Productions, that will make Pixar’s debut on television. The limited series will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on December 11th as part of their 2024 TV lineup.

Originally, the new release date was set in September, a day prior to when Inside Out 2 started streaming on Disney+. However, there was no trailer accompanying that announcement. Fortunately, that’s all changed now. Merely three weeks before its premiere, Pixar has unveiled the trailer for Dream Productions and as an ardent fan of Inside Out, I can confirm it looks fantastic! Despite my eagerness for the new series, I find myself puzzled by the timeline the creators have opted for.

Dream Productions Looks Like A Really Fun Show

Initially, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, disclosed that the project was going to be a mockumentary series focusing on the creative team behind the scenes, who were tasked with manifesting Riley’s dreams and nightmares. In the initial movie, viewers had a brief introduction to these characters from Dream Productions, as Joy, Sadness, and Bing Bong intentionally transformed a dream into a nightmare in an attempt to awaken Riley, enabling their return to headquarters on a train.

Initially, I must confess that when I first heard about the project, I felt a bit uneasy. However, watching the trailer helped to alleviate most of my concerns. It appears that Paula Persimmon’s job as Riley’s daydream director is in jeopardy due to a string of recent nightmares, and her position is being challenged by Xeni, another dream director with contrasting ideas compared to Paula’s long-held vision. With their jobs at stake, tension arises between the two directors.

Alongside the dream characters, the show will include Riley and the initial five emotions in some form or another. From what we can see in the trailer, these four episodes promise to be a rollercoaster of humor and emotion, much like the two Inside Out movies, capable of influencing viewers’ brain chemistry.

But I Don’t Understand Why They Set It Before The Events Of Inside Out 2

I’m equally thrilled for Pixar’s debut TV series and the expansion of the Inside Out franchise, but I can’t grasp why Dream Productions is set when it is. Based on the trailer, the series seems to take place between the first and second films, implying that the new emotions we fell in love with won’t be part of the storyline.

As a dedicated fan, I now understand why Pixar might have hesitated at first. Given that the series was in development before the release of Inside Out 2, it’s not surprising that the writers were cautious about integrating the new characters, as they weren’t sure how audiences would respond to them. However, with the sequel breaking records to become the highest-grossing animated film ever, it certainly feels like something’s missing without Anxiety and the rest of the new emotions being part of the storyline.

Additionally, let me point out that the mini-series will portray a somewhat younger version of Riley compared to her age in the follow-up film. This might narrow down her aspirational possibilities. I believe it would have been more intriguing to watch how the Dream Workers navigate Riley’s teenage years, mirroring the emotions’ challenges in dealing with her growth during the sequel.

If Dream Productions turns out to be highly successful and becomes one of Disney+’s top original series, Pixar might rethink its stance on limiting the show and instead elevate it to a full television series that could encompass all nine of Riley’s emotions. For the time being, we can eagerly anticipate the four episodes coming up, which will be accessible to anyone with a Disney+ subscription starting December 11th.
