Disney’s most recent animated show titled “Win or Lose” may have stirred up some debate recently, but that didn’t hinder its successful debut on Rotten Tomatoes. Launched yesterday, Feb. 19, exclusively on Disney+, the new Pixar series currently boasts a high Rotten Tomatoes score of 89%, with six more episodes yet to air in the first season, suggesting that this number could potentially rise even further.
As a dedicated fan, I can attest that “Win or Lose” beautifully weaves together its rich and varied narratives, creating an authentic and heartfelt portrayal of a tightly-knit community. Similar sentiments were echoed by Alex Maidy from JoBlo’s Movie Network in his review.
Win or Lose stands victorious, proving itself as one of Pixar’s finest productions in the past ten years. Moreover, it demonstrates that original content, rather than sequels or spin-offs, can still yield a top-tier animation that competes with many live-action series.
Titled “Win or Lose“, this series showcases the vocal talents of Will Forte, Ian Chen, Izaac Wang, and Jo Firestone. The story revolves around a mixed softball team at middle school named the Pickles during their crucial championship week. Each episode offers a unique perspective, including one character who identifies as transgender (Kai, voiced by Chanel Stewart). However, due to a controversial plotline, certain dialogue concerning gender identity was removed from the final edit. Rendy Jones from RogerEbert.com expressed, “If this show had been released in its original form, I would proudly call
The Praise Continues for ‘Win or Lose’
Produced by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates, “Win or Lose” has been described as “the most Pixar-like in touch with everyday issues for a while now,” according to Alistair Ryder from AwardsWatch. He also notes that it addresses concerns that you wouldn’t typically hear from a series with Republican leanings. In his review, Julian Roman from MovieWeb states that the series isn’t just appealing to younger audiences, but is something that resonates with the child in all of us.
Win or Lose, produced by Pixar, scores a grand slam by creatively portraying the struggles and insecurities faced when pursuing a passion. Both children and adults will find joy in following the Softball team Pickles’ exciting journey.
Surely, Win or Lose doesn’t entirely succeed in achieving a full grand slam for some critics such as Amy Amatangelo from AVClub. She argues that it often struggles due to its inherent structure. In her words, “The story is told from various perspectives, and viewers are left to construct the broader narrative themselves. This makes it challenging to develop a strong emotional connection with any of the characters.” Michael Hogan from the Daily Telegraph describes it as a haphazard production, stating, “This eight-part series seems like a conglomerate put together by committee, lacking the usual spark and delight that Pixar is known for.
Despite facing controversy, it appears that “Win or Lose” has more positives than negatives. This series has gained a large number of fans and you can understand why by watching the first two episodes on Disney+. The remaining six episodes will be released in pairs every Wednesday until the final episode on March 12.
