- Plants vs Zombies is 16 and still going (relatively) strong
- Take a look back at some of our reviews of the iconic mobile series
- With PvZ 3 still floating in soft launch, players are hungrier than ever for a return to form
16 years have passed since Plants vs. Zombies was initially launched, and today, over a decade and a half later, we can reflect on the evolution of this groundbreaking mobile game. Originating from simple beginnings, progressing through various ownership changes, and expanding beyond just mobile platforms, it’s clear why Plants vs. Zombies has become a gaming icon.
Initially, Popcap Games developed Plants Vs Zombies in the late 2000s, launching it on desktops in 2009. However, it was the transition to mobile platforms in 2010 and the adoption of a free-to-play business model that propelled PvZ to immense popularity.
In the latter half of 2012, Electronic Arts (EA) took over Popcap. Though the shift towards mobile gaming caused some upheaval, resulting in job cuts, the Plants vs. Zombies franchise rapidly emerged as a symbol of mobile gaming with the debut of Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time in 2013.
Beyond mobile
EA harbored grand aspirations for the PvZ franchise, envisioning it as a significant pillar in console gaming as well. The releases of Plants Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare and Plants Vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville received mixed responses, largely due to the marked difference in their third-person shooter gameplay compared to the original concept.
3rd Installment of Plants vs Zombies: Introducing Zomburbia, has been under development since 2020 and is now back in production following a significant update, causing the soft-launched version to be temporarily unavailable. This upcoming release aims to bring the series back to its roots with a fresh new visual aesthetic and the reintroduction of traditional tower defense gameplay.
