PlatinumGames Removes Every Trace of Project G.G

There’s been a buzz about the potential future of the superhero game, Project G.G., as PlatinumGames has taken down all references to it on their official site. The project was first hinted at by Hideki Kamiya in 2020, and it was meant to serve as the conclusion to his trilogy that includes the games Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101.

The game was set to showcase an oversized main character battling enormous foes, a plot point that excited fans anticipating Kamiya’s signature action-packed style. Yet, towards the end of 2023, Kamiya stunned everyone by choosing to depart from PlatinumGames and establish his own company, Clovers.

Curiosity about the future of Project G.G. among fans is mounting, given Kamiya’s departure and the lack of recent updates on the game. The absence of the project from Platinum’s official site recently has sparked speculation that it might have been terminated quietly, leading some to believe it may no longer be in development.

The developer has removed any mentions of the game and redirected the previous web address to the main page. This update also eliminated games such as Star Fox Zero, Babylon’s Fall, and World of Demons from the site. Many of these games were associated with underachievement or licensing problems, but the lack of Project G.G. is notable, considering all the excitement surrounding it.

The termination of Project G.G. from the company’s website has faced strong backlash from former Platinum Games staff members. Jean Pierre Kellams, a previous producer at the firm, openly expressed his disappointment, stating it was “deeply regrettable” that the company chose to erase its history. He referred to the removal as a significant insult, particularly after the dedication and passion put into projects that are now missing from the site.

At the moment, PlatinumGames hasn’t given any public updates regarding the fate of Project G.G. Some enthusiasts speculate that the game might be in development secretly, but it appears more likely that it has been permanently put on hold. During a conversation with VGC in December, Kamiya expressed his disappointment over not being able to finalize Project G.G., likening the situation to his earlier cancelled project, Scalebound.

Without a clear leader following his departure, it appears that the game may not develop according to the original schedule, given that PlatinumGames are currently engrossed in projects such as the upcoming “Ninja Gaiden 4” with Team Ninja.

The studio is still a significant player in the gaming industry due to hits like Astral Chain and Bayonetta 3 creating a splash. However, cancelling Project G.G indicates they’re prioritizing projects with more potential for success or ones that are currently being developed.

For enthusiasts, there’s a key curiosity: Will Platinum Games continue exploring new intellectual properties or stick to proven favorites in their future endeavors?
